Critical Thinking English Language AS LEVEL ONLY D102 AS / A LEVEL D104 What does the course involve? Critical Thinking helps you to develop thinking skills and to analyse and evaluate arguments and information, to identify flaws in other people’s arguments and to assess the credibility of evidence. This course doesn’t involve learning a large body of information, it is about developing skills and as a result is taught in one lesson per week. Standard Entry Requirements See page 9 for details. What does the course involve? An ideal course for those interested in the history and study of the English Language. This course will introduce you to how the English Language originated, how it is used and how it continues to change. English Language is aimed at students who are interested in the power of language and its place in the world. You may wish to study English Language alongside English Literature (particularly if you wish to become a teacher of English), or perhaps combine it with complementary subjects such as History, Law or one of the science subjects. How will I be assessed There are two exams, one in January and one in the summer. There is no coursework element to this course. What can I do after the course? The skills that you will develop are directly relevant to subjects such as English, History, Psychology, and Law, where essays and sometimes written coursework have to be produced because critical thinking helps to develop analytical and evaluative skills. These skills can be applied to any subject or discipline and are particularly helpful at university. In addition leading universities and medical, veterinary science and law schools are increasingly turning to their own admission tests to differentiate between good and outstanding candidates. These tests rely heavily on Critical Thinking skills. Standard Entry Requirements See page 9 for details. Additional Entry Requirements Grade B in GCSE English Language. How will I be assessed There is one 2 hour written exam in the summer and coursework worth 40% of the total marks during the year. The coursework unit involves 2 pieces of writing each for a different audience and purpose. The total length of the coursework pieces is between 1500-2000 words. What can I do after the course? A Level English Language is useful for a wide range of careers in the following areas: Education (at home or abroad), Publishing, Media, Journalism, Museum Service, Management, Business, Charity and Law etc. 100% A LEVEL PASS RATE IN ALL SUBJECTS 19
