Industry Day Despite the gloomy forecast, the weather on Thursday 3 rd July did not dominate the day. Many happy, bright, shining Year 10 students were looking forward to a day without lessons. Little did they know that they would be challenged in many ways of which they had very little previous knowledge. As preparation for their Work Experience in the Autumn, as a way of looking to the future and as part of their citizenship education, Industry Day provided a taster by acclimatising the pupils to new situations. Fourteen employers and service providers presented workshops for an hour. Each group of pupils experienced four different environments, ranging from designing and fitting out a motor vehicle to be used on a building site (Balfour Beatty), to building a tower from straws and masking tape (Rolls-Royce). Each cluster also had a session on interview techniques (Derby City Council) or communication skills (Connexions). The comments from the pupils’ anonymous de-briefing questionnaires clearly showed that they believed they had gained a lot from the day and undoubtedly felt it was worthwhile. “I have learnt to work successfully in a team and focus on things that I can improve and build on.” “I have learned to communicate with people that I don’t know.” “It gave me an idea of what the working environment is like.” One result of the weather was that this year, part of the paper aeroplane challenge (Derby College) had to be held in the corridor rather than outside. Wishing Everyone a safe and wonderful Summer break! Gifted and Talented Day at Nottingham University I recently attended the G & T session at Nottingham Uni. It was a science-based project that encouraged gifted youngsters to develop their skills in science. Lots of schools were invited, including Littleover, and the students were all in Year 9. The session included lots of different activities such as debates on nuclear power or nanotechnology, an investigation about a mystery disease and an experiment on photosynthesis. The debating was very interesting; our group chose the subject of nanotechnology and we won the debate over Mr Pollard’s group with the majority of votes. Overall the day was a great success with a good mix of education and enjoyment. Ruth Hainsworth—9VEL FABULOUS NEWS! We have been successful in acquiring a new singing teacher.
