Media conference – IBM Nanotech<br />
Centre in Rüschlikon<br />
25 June: IBM and <strong>ETH</strong> Zurich announced<br />
their joint nanotechnology<br />
laboratory, in which they are investing<br />
90 million francs. Starting in 2011,<br />
the two partners will begin work on<br />
joint projects in this new<br />
research centre, which is to cover an<br />
area of about 6,000 m 2 .<br />
1 August address by the President of the Swiss Confederation<br />
25 July: President of the Swiss Confederation Pascal Couchepin visited<br />
<strong>ETH</strong> Zurich to record his television address to mark Swiss National Day. In<br />
choosing to make the recording at <strong>ETH</strong>, the President was highlighting the<br />
importance of science and education for Switzerland.<br />

Three new Energy professorships<br />
26 May: <strong>ETH</strong> Zurich announced that it<br />
was planning three new professorships in<br />
Electrical Energy Technology. They will be<br />
f<strong>und</strong>ed by third-party finances, namely<br />
by a donation from the “swisselectric”<br />
association and the companies ABB and<br />
Alstom of a total of 12.5 million francs.<br />
Swissnex in China<br />
7 August: The “Swissnex” network celebrated the official opening of<br />
its new branch in Shanghai. The purpose of Swissnex Shanghai is to<br />
promote cooperation between Switzerland and China in the fields<br />
of education and research. <strong>ETH</strong> Zurich is taking on the role of “leading<br />
house” for scientific cooperation between the two countries.<br />
Winning project for Student Housing<br />
Science City<br />
15 July: It is planned to build accommodation<br />
for 1,000 students in Science City, the<br />
<strong>ETH</strong> Zurich campus on the Hönggerberg.<br />
The project by the “Architektick” group<br />
won the open, anonymous architecture<br />
competition to build the first 400 units.<br />
