Final Thirty<br />
The big moment has finally arrived.<br />
The progress chart on the wall is<br />
covered with big red checkmarks, layout<br />
sheets have buried the entire <strong>of</strong>fice, and<br />
the phone has finally quit ringing.<br />
In the back comer <strong>of</strong> the chaotic mess,<br />
the final shipment <strong>of</strong> layouts for the 1983<br />
Gem are neatly stacked and ready to be<br />
mailed to the printer.<br />
And, after editing 1,128 yearbook<br />
pages in the last five years, it's time for<br />
me to throw in the towel. But first, I would<br />
like to thank several people for their help<br />
and encouragement:<br />
CAROLE HUGHES, my first journalism<br />
instructor, guided me through my<br />
first two years <strong>of</strong> yearbooking at Moscow<br />
High School. Even while editing the<br />
Gem, it was reassuring to know that her<br />
sincere encouragement and sound advice<br />
were only a few blocks away.<br />
JOHN POOL, ReproGraphics<br />
manager, was always willing to lend a<br />
hand. Whether he was called upon to<br />
teach the staff how to use the VDTs, make<br />
PMTs, assist with typesetting or provide<br />
advice on the budget - his expertise was<br />
always appreciated.<br />
DEAN VETTRUS, ASUI general<br />
manager, provided suggestions and encouragement<br />
when they were needed the<br />

makers." Although everyone contributed<br />
their special talents, for the past two<br />
years, JUUE REAGAN, managing editor<br />
and CLINT KENDRICK, sports editor,<br />
have been scrambling behind the scenes<br />
to assure the deadlines were met. Without<br />
their never-ending assistance, the 1982<br />
and 1983 Gems would still be on the<br />
drawing boards.<br />

Volume 81 ol the <strong>University</strong> ol <strong>Idaho</strong>'s Gem <strong>of</strong> the Mountains was lithographed by the Delmar<br />
Printing Company <strong>of</strong> Charlotte, North Carolina. Franlc Myers, university director, and Sherry Smith,<br />
customer service adviser, worked hand-in-hand with the yearbook journalists.<br />
The Gem submitted camera-ready layouts permitting the staff to utilize many typographic and<br />
graphic effects.<br />
Headline typestyles are as follows: Benguiat Medium Condensed in campus life, Belwe Light<br />
in people, Caslon No. 540 in academics, Souvenir Demi in groups, ltalia Medium in sports, Italia<br />
Book in Sportsbreak Magazine, Serif Gothic Outline for type logos in Sportsbreak Magazine, Avante<br />
Garde Extra IJght and Gothic Book in community. Opening and closing headlines were set in Lubalin<br />
Graph Extra IJght.<br />
Body type was set in 10/11 Stymie Medium. Opening, closing, and divider pages were set in<br />
14116 Stymie lJght. Captions were set in 89 Stymie Bold with a 10 pt. bold italic lead·ln. Opening,<br />
closing, and divider page captions were set in 10/11 Stymie Bold with a 12 pt. bold italic lead-in.<br />
All body copy was entered on video display terminals and processed on a Compuqraphic MCS<br />
8400 photo-typesetter.<br />
With the exception <strong>of</strong> those typeset In Souvenir Demi and Avante Garde, most headlines were<br />
handset using Letraset, Formatt, and Chartpak transfer type.<br />
All layout styles were designed by the staff using five columns across a double page spread (campus<br />
life), three column (people and groups), "two on four'' columns (a.cademics), four column (athletics),<br />
two column with a fioating plus column (community) and freestyle (opening, closing, dividers).<br />
All rule lines were laid down by staff members using border tape. Lines close register to photos<br />
are 2 pt. and those olose register to screened tint blocks are 1 pt. All other black rule lines are<br />
hairlines.<br />
Scree.ned backgrounds were handled by Delmar technicians. All tints are either 10 or 20 percent<br />
black, with the exception <strong>of</strong> the dividers which also utili~ed 40 percent black.<br />
Paper stock is 80 pound enamel. Endsheet stock is 65 pound cover weight stock, (Desert 123)<br />
with brown inJc applied.<br />
The cover material is Sturd.ite (Delmar 78365) on a 160 pt. binder's board with a design blind<br />
embossed from a molded die. A black overton.e rub was used to highlight th.e design and the Spanish<br />
grain (Delmar 1820). Gold (AC-8) was applied to the embossed type and rule lines. The cover was<br />
created by the staff using a theme logo designed by Gary Lundqren. The embossed artwork was<br />
sketched by Delmar artists from a photo submitted by the Gem.<br />
All four-color separations were individually handmade from slide transparencies submitted by<br />
the staff. Color press pro<strong>of</strong>s were provided by Delmar to allow the staff to check color quality.<br />
All underclass and senior portraits were taken by Varden Studios <strong>of</strong> Rochester, New York.<br />
Spot color ink was selected from the Pantone Matching System (PMS) and process color inks.<br />
Includ.ed are the following: PMS 124 (qold) on the pages 1, 2-3, 4·5, 6-7, 8-9, 250-251, 252-253,<br />
254-255, 256, PMS 877 (silver} on the paqes 1, 2-3, 4-5, 6-7.<br />
The 1982 Gem, edited by Gary Lundgren, received the Medalist Award from the Columbia<br />
Scholastic Press Association with All-Columbian citations for Theme, Layout/Design,<br />
Coverage/Copy, Community Coverage and Cover Design. The 1982 Gem is also a contender for<br />
the Pacemaker Award from the Associated Collegiate Press having qualified as a finalist in that<br />
competition by receiving an All-American rating. The Gem was featured in the December issue<br />
<strong>of</strong> Scholastic Editor's Trends in Publications.<br />
The Gem Is a department <strong>of</strong> the Associated Student Government at the Univers!Uy <strong>of</strong> <strong>Idaho</strong>.<br />
The yearbook was produced entirely by students without faculty supervision.<br />
Employing a maqazlne format, the Gem had a press run <strong>of</strong> 1,500 copies. The yearbook editor<br />
visited the printer's plant to watch the color and black and white press runs. The 1983 Gem <strong>of</strong><br />
the Mountains yearbook, the Gem and the theme logos are copyrighted by the yearbook staff. No<br />
part <strong>of</strong> this yearbook may be copied, photocopied, or in any other way reproduced without the<br />
written permission <strong>of</strong> Gary Lundgren, the 1983 Gem editor. This is the second edition to be<br />
copyrighted.<br />
