became an addict. Another officer found Officer
Bruce Croydon's motorcycle parked in
the alley back of the Adams Theatre. Croydon
was assigned to check cai- parking on
the west side of downtown, but came downtown
and went in the show instead—where
he was found by the second officer, avidly
watching a western. The police trial board
CLEVELAND - National Theatre Supply
reports a lively interest on the part of exhibitors
to modernize and glamorize their
theatres in the wake of the forthcoming national
business-building plan on the theory
that physical improvements are favorably reflected
at the boxoffice.
Thomas R. Sandell Leases
Jefferson, Springfield
SPRINGIELD, MASS.—Thomas R. Sandell,
new lessee at the Jefferson Theatre,
subsequent-run house in this western
Massachusetts industrial center, is far
from depressed when it comes to discussing
the future of independent exhibition.
Sandell, leasing the theatre from the Rifkin
interests, calls his firm Triangle Theatres.
He slated his initial excursion into the
first-run field for June 18, booking a dual
horror bill consisting of "Horror Maniacs"
and "Strangler's Morgue."
This particular schedule was preceded by
what Sandell termed his MGM Film Festival,
top revivals on double bills. These shows included
such titles as The Great Caruso and
The Student Prince, The Tender Trap and
Mogambo. Blackboard Jungle and Battleground.
Moreover, Sandell anticipates more first
runs. He has slated Rank's "Reach for the
Sky," the Hedy cla.ssic, "Ecstasy," and "Albert
Schweitzer."
Sandell is also planning a student discount
policy, which he believes is the first
to be put into effect in metropohtan Springfield.
Students between the ages of 12 and
18 are eligible.
Farm Price Rise and Rain
Expected to Help Theatres
MINNEAPOLIS—A rise in fai-m prices phis
recent good rainfalls are expected to help
the boxoffice in this territory, which is mainly
dependent on agricultural prosperity for its
economic well being.
Farm income in the area climbed above
1957 levels during the fii'st four months of
1958 according to the Minneapolis Federal
Reserve bank report. There have been showers
over a wide expan.se to bring needed
moisture for the growing crops and pasture.
While business generaUy continued to recede,
the rate of decline has slowed, according
to the report. And, declaies the report,
the recession hasn't been so severe for this
district as it has been in most of the nation's
other areas.
Among favorable factors is a drop in
Minne.sota's joble.ss rolls, according to the
state Employment Security Divi.sion office.
The di-op is estimated at 2.300.
