from the well. It is an essential element in public-health efforts because the only
sale way to provide adequate sanitary protection from surface contamination is to
seal the well and install a pump. Unless this and other public-health measures are
taken to protect the well, water-related diseases will continue to take their toll.
In the coming years, limited resources will have serious consequences upon the
provision of safe, adequate, water supplies for rural populations. If this problem is
to be addressed, governments and water authorities must focus their resources on
developing low-cost technologies that are easily understood, operated, and
maintained at the village level. By publishing this volume, we hope that the results
of this research will stimulate the implementation of such appropriate technology
and at the same time foster new research initiatives.
