wells located in the three regions were plotted<br />

against calendar time (see, for example, Fig. 9).<br />

Records of the damaged parts of both the<br />

above- and below-ground components of<br />

PVC pumps from installation until the end of<br />

the field test were carefully tabulated.<br />

Table 3 presents a summary of the frequency<br />

of the different causes of pump failure.<br />

Design<br />

AIT-PVC Handpump<br />

Based on the field monitoring and laboratory<br />

test results, a final design, called the AIT-PVC<br />

handpump, was developed. It incorporated<br />

the following features.<br />

A new type of fulcrum link, hinged at both<br />
