Design Competition Annual Design Contest 2007 was the 22nd anniversary of our design competition for furniture parts, accessories and hardware. In 2007 there were three winners, and in 2006 two. All are shown here and on the next page. With co-sponsorship from our friends at Wood & Wood Products magazine, our forum has become recognized as THE place to submit your design. Entry is simple: Send a write-up, with a drawing is better, and a model is even better. Be clear in your description. The only sticky rule is the entry must arrive FEDEX or Registered Return Receipt mail. The entry deadline is officially September 1 every year. It’s a pretty good deal. First Place (and there are only First Place awards) consists of $1,000, an engraved achievement award, and a royalty based on the sales of the winning entry. The number of First Place awards varies year to year, and have been from one to four. Annually we send out six figures of royalties. Here are the First Place awards from 2006 & 2007: WAL-90 Black “Wallace” Flexible Grommet Designed by: Tony Toosky and Julien Egger of Los Angeles A flexible grommet molded in one piece of strong and flexible rubber. Note the raised opening stays closed until cords are passed through. See page 180 for full details. Zube Leg Designed by: Mark Zube of Oconomowoc, WI Zube’s design was of a gorgeous tapered leg. SWS6 Stainless Steel “Newport” SWS6 Counter Support Designed by: Mel Archer of Hillsboro, OR Mel’s design concept was to permit visibility through kitchen windows from beneath the dining counter, so he came up with this slim-line support. See page 180 for full details. Design Competition Loop Leg Designed by: Peter J. Pless of Marquette, MI Mr. Pless’s concept is laser-cut steel sheet, with multiple bends to shape. TL27/CF/1-90 Black Carbon Fibre Taking materials in a whole new direction is what they did and designed this fine table leg of carbon fibre. John and Blu submitted a unique application of high tech and super-strong carbon fibre, common in aircraft and racing cars, but rarely seen in furniture designs.
