The season of renewal is upon us, offering a fresh 

start and with that, new opportunities and blessings. 

2013 was highlighted by the 100th anniversary of the 

Village. This included several celebrations honoring this 

milestone and the kick off of the 100th Anniversary Capital Campaign. 

The Campaign is important because it sets into motion projects and 

upgrades to improve our campus and attract new members. These 

new projects were selected only after much prayer, careful thought and 

planning. Our goal throughout this process is to always stay focused on 

our mission, members, staff and sustainable growth. 

Beginning our second century is exciting and challenging. I would 

encourage each of you, if you have not already, to join with us in 

participating in the 100th Anniversary Capital Champaign. It is the 

support of folks like you that has allowed us to serve others in a very meaningful way. We are so grateful for all 

you have done. God’s will and guidance remain the centerpiece of our plans going forward. 

The Lord has richly blessed Advent Christian Village with an astonishing 100 years of service to Christ, 

those in need and our members, but ... our work is not finished!

President’s Report 

2013 

The Year in Review 

Dear Friend, 

2013 was a significant year in the life of 

Advent Christian Village, as we used the milestone 

of our 100th anniversary to recognize how God 

has blessed this ministry and impacted many 

lives through it. Instead of just celebrating for a day, we 

stretched the festivities over the entire year and celebrated 

different aspects of the ministry of ACV. 

We are often asked by those who had past connections 

with the Village where the old historical buildings 

were located. In January, we dedicated the Heritage Trail 

ACV President Emeritus Pomeroy Carter, former administrator Dr. Sid Bradley, 

former senior pastor Rev. Ron Thomas and Past President Jim Humbles (left to 

right) held a panel discussion on the topic of ACV’s relationship with the Advent 

Christian denomination during 2013’s Winter Retreat.

in memory of Zelene Carter Inman. The trail marks out 

the sites of those buildings and takes people on a journey 

through the early days of ACV. 

February brought the dedication of the canopy road 

to the memory of Jimmy Barrington and 100 trees were 

planted across the campus in honor of the centennial. As 

these trees grow they will beautify the campus and be a 

reminder of God’s continued blessing. 

The biennial Winter Retreat became the perfect setting 

to celebrate ACV’s partnership with the Advent Christian 

denomination. Two former 

Village administrators— 

Dr. Sid Bradley and Rev. 

Ron Thomas—returned to 

Dowling Park to lead this 

time of spiritual renewal. 

On Sunday, they were 

joined by former presidents 

Jim Humbles and Pomeroy 

Carter in a panel discussion 

that allowed the audience 

an inside glimpse into some 

of the stories that were 

never told about the history 

and inner workings of ACV. 

It was truly a wonderful 

reminder of the uniqueness 

of this ministry and how

God’s hand of blessing has 

remained upon it. 

At the annual Scholarship 

Banquet, ACV’s 

educational connections 

were recognized. Former 

educational scholarship 

recipients returned and 

expressed how the scholarships 

had impacted their 

lives. Former educators also 

returned to express appreciation 

for ACV’s dedication 

to the educational process 

and to the students in the 

healthcare field and beyond.

outstanding musical stage production, Treasures of the 

Suwannee, which depicted the beginning of Dowling Park 

and the birth of Advent Christian Village. It was truly a fun 

and yet moving time of remembrance. 

Our members got involved in the celebration by 

writing stories for a centennial edition of Village Voices, in 

which they told remembrances of days gone by. They also 

gathered their favorite recipes for a centennial cookbook. 

Both of these publications have proven to be very popular 

and were wonderful commemorations. 

During the Summer, Florida House Representative 

Treasures of the Suwannee, first performed in 

1999 as part of the Suwannee County millennial 

celebration, was revived in 2013 to add to ACV’s 

Centennial Celebration. The production, written 

almost completely by Village staff, tells the history 

of how Dowling Park and the Advent Christian Home 

& Orphanage (now Advent Christian Village) came to 

be through narraration, music, song and acting. 

Elizabeth Porter and Florida Senator Charlie Dean each 

presented framed copies of resolutions that passed the 

Florida House and Florida Senate in honor of ACV’s centennial. 

Additionally, a similar resolution was passed by the 

Suwannee County Commissioners. The resolutions honor 

ACV as an outstanding model for retirement communities 

that has survived and thrived over the past 100 years. 

September brought many of the alumni of the Children’s 

Program back to Dowling Park to renew old 

acquaintances and to celebrate ACV’s ministry to children.

ACV experienced its largest alumni reunion weekend 

in 2013, welcoming home many adults who called 

Dowling Park home for much of their childhoods. 

Smiles and hugs were common between old friends 

who may not have seen each other in many years. 


The celebration held on ACV’s 100th anniversary, Dec. 17, 2013, was a festive affair. Clockwise, starting in the

the alumni gave their recollections of what it was like to 

grow up in Dowling Park. 

Not wanting to remain solely focused on the past, in 

October, we celebrated with a look to the future. Based 

upon the latest Master Development Plan, the 100th Anniversary 

Capital Campaign was launched. The community 

has been very receptive to the projects that are included in 

the campaign and many have supported it financially. The 

campaign is aimed at growing the population of the Village, 

while keeping the neighborhood feeling that permeates the 

community. The projects will also improve ACV’s curb 

appeal and expand some existing services. 

The annual Village Builders’ Guild banquet became the 

perfect forum to recognize key contributors to ACV, past 

and present. Without these faithful friends, the ministry of 

Advent Christian Village could not survive. 

The culmination of the year took place on the actual 

100th anniversary, Dec. 17, 2013. Rumph Dining Room 

was adorned in green and gold, a jazz band added festive 

flair, photos of the past 100 years scrolled on an electronic 

display, and special guests added meaning to the day. 

Several of the children of Eula Setzer, one of the original 

children that moved into the orphanage 100 years ago, 

cut the anniversary cake. Former president Jim Humbles 

spoke of how, through Village history, God has raised up 

those key people who have a heart for ministry to lead this 

great charge of caring for senior adults, families in need 

and children. President Emeritus Pomeroy Carter spoke of 

the key donors God provided through the years who made 

it possible to develop the exceptional services and facilities, 

making Dowling Park the outstanding place it is today. 

Also on display were items that were collected to go into a 

time capsule to be opened on a future landmark anniversary. 

It was truly a special day and we were honored to be 

part of this amazing milestone.

centennial, the day-to-day aspects of life at Dowling Park 

did continue. Renovations at Good Samaritan Center 

are ongoing and will make the facility a more appealing 

home to those who live there. We held annual events such 

as the Suwannee Gala for Treasure Seekers that raises 

money to send children to Camp Suwannee; Spring Fling 

that brought the community together for a day of fun; an 

outstanding Artist Series season; and Autumn Fest, which 

included a new feature this year called the Antiques Rivershow. 

Experts from various fields, along with some of our 

own members who have knowledge of antiquities, offered 

their expertise as people brought their unique items to 

learn more about them. 

Several guest groups were welcomed to the community, 

such as the volunteers from RVICS and Led2Serv, 

who offered their time in service to ACV. The Japanese 

social work students returned to ACV for a second year 

of cultural exchange to learn how this community delivers 

care and services to seniors. We are pleased to be a partner 

with groups like this. 

The community was saddened when Dr. Nasseer 

Masoodi stepped down as ACV’s Physician and Chief 

Medical Officer. He was a true asset to the Village and we 

miss him and his family. In June 2014, Dr. Maria Gonzalez 

will join us from Orlando. She is well qualified to take up 

where Dr. Masoodi left off, and we are eagerly awaiting 

her arrival. 

We were pleased to welcome some new faces to ACV’s 

administrative staff in 2013. Beth Fulford is ACV’s new 

Nurse Practitioner. Beth’s big smile, warm hugs and medical 

thoroughness are appreciated by her patients. 

Although not a new employee, Darleen Hinrichs 

was promoted from her position in Communications to 

Director for Resource Development. She has worked in the 

Village in various roles for 19 years and has eagerly taken 

on her new role. She is available if you need assistance with 

planned giving or have questions about the 100th Anniversary 

Capital Campaign. 

Finally, Deidra Newman is ACV’s new Marketing 

Director. Deidra has a wide variety of leadership and 

marketing experience. She has hit the ground running 

and we are excited to see where her efforts will lead. We 

welcome each of these staff members to their new roles. 

Truly, 2013 was an exciting year for Advent Christian 

Village. It is good to celebrate and remember all that God 

has done to bring this ministry through times of challenge 

and blessing. He truly has been our provider and sustainer. 

He has blessed this ministry with outstanding staff members 

who truly care for those we serve, and with the wonderful 

members who live here, many of whom give sacrificially of 

their time and resources to further this ministry. 

We now eagerly move on to a second century of service 

in Christ’s name, seeking His guidance in serving His children. 

We are so appreciative of the many individuals, 

churches and organizations that have given so generously 

to support the vital ministries

100th Anniversary Capital Campaign Update 

A Firm Foundation 

For the Future 

Lawrence House at Taylor Commons 


In October 2013, we launched the 

100th Anniversary Capital Campaign, a 

$3.4 million fundraising effort for capital 

projects at ACV. Since then, faithful friends 

have given and pledged generously, and 

we are so grateful for this outpouring of 

support for this community. We have not 

yet reached the goal, however, and there is 

still time for your gift if you wish to be part 

of this exciting development. 

The projects included in the 100th 

Anniversary Capital Campaign are: 

• Lawrence House: two-story building 

with eight apartments in the new 

Taylor Commons neighborhood 

• Cleo’s Meeting House: gathering 

place within Taylor Commons 

• Ceramics Shop: relocating and 

expanding the current shop 

• South Community Center: gathering 

place in new manufactured housing 

neighborhood 

• Village Heritage/Archives Building: 

wing of public library that is on track 

to be built at ACV, which will house 

ACV’s historical collections 

• Village Church Christian Education 

Expansion and Office Reconfiguration 

• New Assisted Living Facility 

Construction has begun on Taylor Commons. 

These projects were taken from the 

latest Master Development Plan recently 

approved by ACV’s Board of Directors. In 

that plan is Taylor Commons, a new independent 

living neighborhood of modern 

two bedroom/two bathroom apartments 

with larger kitchens and covered parking. 

The neighborhood will be located along 

Dowling Park Dr. and will enhance first 

impressions of the community. Within 

Taylor Commons will be Lawrence House, 

a two-story building of eight apartments; 

20 “row house” style apartments; and 

Cleo’s Meeting House. Construction of 

Taylor Commons has already begun and 

the community eagerly awaits the completion 

of this phase late in 2014. 

A new manufactured housing development 

on the south side of the campus will 

include larger and more modern manufactured 

homes. The homes will be situated in 

clusters and a community center will be a 

popular gathering spot for the area. 

New assisted living units will be 

located near the Village vineyard. This 

will meet the desire for assisted living for 

those who are more self-sufficient, housing 

smaller groups of members in multiple 

buildings. 

A new home ownership option will 

be introduced through modern condominiums 

located close to Copeland 

Community Center. The homeowner will 

have minimal maintenance responsibilities, 

as they participate in a homeowners 

association that will provide all exterior 

and systems maintenance. These will be 

built as soon as members contract for a 

home. 

Each of the naming opportunities 

within the campaign has been chosen, but 

many honor and memorial opportunities 

remain for those who would like to recognize 

a loved one with their gift. For more

residential setting and in the surrounding communities. Each year, hundreds of friends of ACV join as partners 

in ministry through their generous support of the Benevolent Fund and other giving opportunities. Without that

Continue His Vision 

Ways to Perpetuate the Ministry of Advent Christian Village 

Dr. Burr A.L. Bixler had a vision. He made 

an appeal to leaders of the Advent Christian 

denomination, requesting that the land they 

had been given along the Suwannee River be 

used as an orphanage and home for retired ministers and 

missionaries. And so, Advent Christian Village was born 

in 1913. 

Bixler believed Dowling Park could be a place of 

refuge for young and older alike; a place of compassionate 

care and security for those who needed it most. And so 

it has been, thanks in large part to the many generous 

friends who supported this ministry over the past 100 

years. 

Advent Christian Village has developed into a vibrant 

community of nearly 800 members from all backgrounds 

who have found ACV to be a meaningful place to live, 

offering them more than most any other option they 

considered. Yet still, Dr. Bixler’s vision of creating a place 

to care for those who had nowhere else to go continues to 

be reality in Dowling Park. 

You can help to continue Dr. Bixler’s vision, while 

creating a legacy of your own. If you have been touched 

by this ministry directly or indirectly and would like to 

help secure its future, consider giving a “planned gift.” 

A planned gift is any major gift made in a lifetime or 

at death as part of an overall financial and/or estate plan. 

While other gifts from a donor’s discretionary income 

may be budgeted for, they do not qualify as planned gifts. 

There are three types of planned gifts. 

1. Outright gifts of valued assets, such as real estate, life insurance or personal property. 

2. Gifts that provide income or other financial benefits to the donor in return for the contribution. 

3. Gifts payable upon the donor’s death. 

One common thread exists among each of these: the 

desire to give to a cause the donor believes in strongly, 

and, in many cases, the desire to continue their support 

after they are gone: to create a legacy. 

Are you interested in creating such a legacy? One of 

the ways we help donors is by listening to their future 

plans and helping them to devise strategies to help them 

best accomplish their goals. Often this includes explaining 

the giving strategies that include attractive tax advantages 

that have been tested over time. We also encourage you to 

consult with an attorney or financial advisor.

The ministry of Advent Christian Village is one of expressing Christ’s love to those we serve. One of the things 

that sets ACV apart is that, thanks to benevolent gifts, the ministry and services of ACV are available to all, not just 

those with abundant resources. 

Benevolent Ministry: How are gifts used? 

• Senior adults: Housing, meals, essential services, 

medications and more 

• Families: Assistance in times of crisis, help in getting 

back on their feet 

• Children: Special assistance and programming 

custom designed for their specific needs 

ACV relies upon the generosity of individuals, 

organizations and churches to accomplish its most worthwhile 

mission. Support comes in many forms and serves a 

variety of purposes. 

Direct Giving: All gifts received that are not specifically 

earmarked are used for the Benevolent Ministry. 

Endowment Funds: Funds are invested conservatively 

and a portion of the annual income is used to help 

defray the expenses of the benevolent ministry, special 

programs and services, and facility upkeep. Named 

endowments are established with a minimum of $10,000 

paid over a period of up to 3 years and the purpose can 

be chosen by the donor. 

Special Project Funds: Gifts that have been 

earmarked to assist with specific projects in various 

departments across ACV. 

Capital Funds: Such as gifts designated for the 100th 

Anniversary Capital Campaign, are specifically for the 

construction and maintenance of ACV facilities. Capital 

funds keep costs down for members because facilities are 

built without debt. 

Ways to Give: 

1. Cash (checks, credit cards, IRA distributions, gifts 

of stock) 

2. Non-cash Gifts: Any tangible asset that you wish 

to donate either for use or to sell. 

3. Planned or Deferred Gifts: 

• Outright gifts of valued assets such as real 

estate or personal property 

• Gifts that return income or other financial 

benefits to the donor in return for the contribution 

(ex. Charitable Gift Annuities, Charitable 

Remainder Trusts) 

• Gifts payable upon the donor’s death: Life 

insurance, bequests, life estate agreements
