<strong>The</strong>n Sugreeva and Hanuman spoke encouraging words.<br />

It was very moving to see a warrior and saviour in such a<br />

state of sorrow. Sugreeva and Hanuman elaborated the plan<br />

to trace Sita and recover her. Presently, the discussions<br />

grew into a council of war and they planned how they would<br />

set forth and search and not rest until Sita was found. Rama<br />

lamented, “Oh, human limitation that denies one the far-sight<br />

to know where, in which corner of the world or the heavens,<br />

that monster is holding Sita.”<br />

Hanuman spoke practically at this point. “First thing is to<br />

vanquish Vali. Sugreeva must be firmly established in his<br />

seat. <strong>The</strong>n we can gather our army. We need a big army for<br />

this task, as we must search simultaneously in every nook<br />

and corner and attack and overcome our enemy before<br />

rescuing the noble lady. So the first act to perform is to<br />

vanquish Vali. Let us go forth.”<br />

<strong>The</strong>y went through forests and mountains, fragrant with<br />

sandalwood and other trees, and reached Kiskinda<br />

mountain. Rama said to Sugreeva, “You will now go forward<br />

alone and call out Vali for a fight. I will stand aside unseen<br />

and shoot my arrow into him at the right moment.” Sugreeva<br />

had now full trust in Rama. He marched to the hilltop and<br />

shouted, “Oh, my brother Vali, come on, face me now in<br />

battle if you dare.”<br />

<strong>The</strong>se words resounded through the silent forests and<br />

entered Vali’s right ear while he slept. Vali sat up and
