themselves. Have each New Member introduce himself by sharing the following:
• Full Name and Nickname (if applicable)
• Hometown and State
• College Major
• An achievement from high school or college
• An unknown fact or experience about himself
IV. Balloon Towers – 25 Minutes
Divide the group into smaller groups; there should be no more than ten to a group. Give
each group a bag of balloons and one roll of tape. They have 15 minutes to build the
tallest balloon tower in the room. The bottom of the tower has to touch the floor, and they
can only use the balloons and the tape to complete this project. Give them 15 minutes to
build their towers. At the end of 15 minutes, see who has the tallest tower and give their
team a prize. Bring the group together and ask the following processing questions:
PROCESSING QUESTIONS
• Why do the towers look different? What does this translate into for the group in
regard to achieving your goals?
• Did this become a competition? Was that part of the instructions? Why did you all
work in separate groups? How did it affect the construction of your tower?
• How did your group communicate?
• Did anyone assume leadership?
• Did your group work together or individually?
• If instead of saying build a balloon tower, I said recruit ten men, what would have happened?
V. Goal Setting – 60 Minutes
Open your own copy of the Membership Education Workbook to The Power of Goals,
by Robert M. Sheehan (WBOOK 8). Members should also open their workbooks to The
Power of Goals, by Robert M. Sheehan (WBOOK 8). Lead the group in a discussion on the
importance of setting goals, what defines a SMART goal, and why a goal-driven attitude
will lead this early group to success from day one. Make sure to define the differences
between v. 1.0, v. 2.0, and v. 3.0 SMART goals.
GOAL SETTING ACTIVITY
• Ask members to locate the SMART Goal pages in their Workbooks (WBOOK 9-11).
Task them with individually creating v. 1.0, v. 2.0, and v. 3.0 SMART goals. Provide
them with the context that they are coming up with goals for the group, not for
themselves as individuals. Give them ten minutes to individually complete the pages
in their workbook.
