Better Man PROGRAM OVERVIEW
BETTER MAN PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Better Man Program is Alpha Sigma Phi’s comprehensive membership education program. The
program begins with the Pledge Ceremony and continues through and beyond the new member
education process and the Initiation Ceremony. The program follows the undergraduate experience in
Alpha Sigma Phi and concludes with the Senior Service Ceremony before graduation.
There are five Phases within the Better Man Program:
Alpha Phase: The Alpha Phase of the Better Man Program, facilitated by the Membership Education
Director, has been designed exclusively for the Fraternity’s new members, and is to be facilitated
during the semester of their Initiation Ceremony. It aims to prepare men for membership in Alpha
Sigma Phi, through a facilitated dialogue designed to help members in better understanding the
values of Alpha Sigma Phi, the obligations of membership, the beliefs that make us unique, and the
structure and purpose of our organization. Initiation into membership in Alpha Sigma Phi occurs after
Week Five of this nine-week program.
Sigma Phase: The Sigma Phase of the Better Man Program, facilitated by the Vice President, has
been designed specifically for the Fraternity’s initiated brothers. It aims to enrich membership
through an ongoing dialogue of education with the purpose of creating well-rounded, Better Men.
The program focuses on sixteen key areas: Social Excellence, Campus Resources, Leadership and
Involvement, Cultural Awareness, Academic Excellence, Interfraternalism, Effective Communication,
Service and Philanthropy, Ethical Decision Making, Health and Wellness, Civic Engagement, Spiritual
Awareness, Career Planning, Lifelong Learning, Mentoring, and Life Skills.
Phi Phase: The Phi Phase of the Better Man Program, facilitated by the Alumni Director, has been
designed exclusively for the Fraternity’s initiated brothers in their final year of college. It aims to
prepare each brother for the upcoming transition into adulthood as an alumnus of the Fraternity. The
program focuses on six key areas: Remaining Engaged with the Fraternity, the Post-Graduation
Experience, Networking in the 21st Century, Life Transitions, Financial Management, and Career and
Life Planning.
Founding Father Education: Founding Father Education is designed exclusively for new members
who are starting or restarting a new colony of the Fraternity. It aims to give Founding Fathers the
tools to make better decisions about the direction of the new group, and to understand the structure,
responsibilities, and operations of the Fraternity and its members. Founding Father Education offers
each undergraduate an opportunity for both personal and professional development and growth.
Responsible Sig Education: Responsible Sig Education is typically completed as part of the Alpha
Phase of the Better Man Program, but can also be completed at other times. It aims to leave
members with a clear understanding of how to make responsible decisions and keep themselves
and others safe.
