The following shows <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> <strong>Deaf</strong> people as recorded by six National Associations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Deaf</strong> <strong>the</strong>mselves (Belarus,<br />

Kazakhstan, Moldova, Russian <strong>Federation</strong>, Ukraine and Uzbekistan). Two countries (Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan) may have used<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir government’s <strong>of</strong>ficial statistic <strong>of</strong> <strong>Deaf</strong> people in <strong>the</strong>ir country.<br />

It was interesting to note that <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficial number <strong>of</strong> <strong>Deaf</strong> people in <strong>the</strong> Russian <strong>Federation</strong> is 13 million according to <strong>the</strong><br />

government whereas <strong>the</strong> National Association <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Deaf</strong> in Russian <strong>Federation</strong> has recorded only 149,541 people.<br />

National Associations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Deaf</strong> from Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan also expressed separately <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> <strong>Deaf</strong><br />

women and men in <strong>the</strong>ir country:<br />

The next question in <strong>the</strong> survey provides an essential record <strong>of</strong> <strong>Deaf</strong> people who use sign language as <strong>the</strong>ir primary language.<br />

Seven out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eight countries reported <strong>the</strong>ir number <strong>of</strong> Sign Language Users as below:<br />

and funded by <strong>the</strong> Swedish Agency for International Development Cooperation (Sida) and Swedish Organisations <strong>of</strong> Disabled Persons<br />

International Aid Association (Shia).
