One of the most beautiful buildings in the city – Izrael Poznański’s
Palace – is used as the seat of the Museum of History of the City
of Łódź. This interdisciplinary museum was founded in 1975 and
has gathered a wide range of artefacts related to the history of Łódź
– a city from the medieval period, yet celebrating its ‘golden age’
in the 19th century. When visiting the historic interiors you can
learn about the history and culture of the past ages and about the
dynamics of transformations in the last and the present centuries.
The museum also presents important figures and events connected
with Łódź – A. Rubinstein, A. Tansman, J. Kosiński and J. Karski,
as well as collections commemorating the events which shaped this
multinational, multicultural and multidenominational industrial
metropolis.

Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum
The museum was created in 1956 as a result of combining the
Archaeological Museum and the Ethnographic Museum. The permanent
exposition encompasses an ethnographic and numismatic
exhibition, illustrating the history of money in Poland. At the end
of 2008 the permanent exposition was enriched with archaeological
exhibition, reconstructing the history of settlement in central
Poland, from the distant past to the 17th century. This is the only
museum in the country with a rich collection of exhibits related
to puppet theatre and puppet films. The Puppet Show Section
presents décor designs, puppets, elements of stage scenery, recordings,
programmes, posters and photographic documentation of
performances.

The museum is housed in the 19th-century palace of Karol
Scheibler, one of the most important industrialists of Łódź. The
Museum of Cinematography, which took over the building in 1986,
collects exhibits and documents the history of Polish cinematography
– film art, technique and production – which has been centred
around Łódź for many years. The museum collection includes valuable,
often unique appliances of the period immediately preceding
the development of cinema: magic lanterns, stereoscopes and optical
toys. An important part of the collection are film set designs, costumes,
décor for animated and feature films, and one of the largest
European collections of Polish and foreign film posters.

Art Museum
The Art Museum of Łódź, operating since 1930, is famous and
valued in the whole world. It presents works by such celebrities as
Max Ernst, Pablo Picasso, Władysław Strzemiński, Katarzyna Kobro
and Henryk Stażewski. In 2008 a new chapter in the history of
the Art Museum in Łódź started. A new building of the museum
– MS² – was opened on the premises of the Manufaktura complex.
3000 m² of the new Art Zone will be occupied by permanent exposition
and 600 m² will be designated for the organisation of temporary
displays. A demanding exhibition programme, accompanying
meetings, film projections and concerts make the museum a place
vibrant with life.
