Water reservoirs in Łódź voivodeship
Łódź voivodeship has two large water reservoirs: Zalew Sulejowski
on the Pilica River and Jeziorsko on the Warta River. The first one
is perfect for all kinds of water sports. During summer, regattas,
sailing courses and camps are held here. The canoe and kayak route
of the Pilica River runs along the lake. There are also footpaths and
bicycle routes along the shore line.
The other one, Jeziorsko, is the largest water basin in Łódź voivodeship,
with the area of 4230 hectares (10.5 thousand acres). The
southern part of it is the biggest nature reserve in the region. Shallow
waters, numerous small isles and marshy areas create the perfect
environment for birds nesting here (130 species). The northern part,
thanks to the actively developing tourist base, is a perfect place for
people enjoying active tourism.
The Łódź Province
Canoe trails
The Łódź Province has several interesting possibilities for canoeing
enthusiasts. The canoe trail of the Pilica River, which belongs
to the most beautiful river valleys in central Poland, is worth special
attention. In the Łódź region the river flows, among others, through
Przedbórz, Bąkowa Góra, Sulejów, Spała and Inowłódz. It is also
worth going on the Warta River, flowing through such picturesque
areas of Łódź as the Załęcze Landscape Park or the Warta-Widawka
Landscape Park. Canoeists looking for more challenging rivers can
go on the Widawka River, the Rawka River or the Drzewiczka
River.
At first glance, the Łódź Province doe not seem to be associated
with amber. Erroneously. According to archaeological research,
part of the Amber Route – an ancient trade route for the transfer
of amber from the Baltic Sea to the Roman Empire – might have
run across the Łódź Province. Roman archaeological finds in the
valleys of the Warta River and the Bzura River attest to this assumption.
Thus, the Łódź Province offers to visitors a trip following the
route of ancient Romans. The section of the Amber Route running
through the Łódź Province can be covered by bicycle, admiring
monuments of wooden architecture, such as the churches in the area
of Wieluń. In the Łódź Province the Amber Route stretches from
Wieruszów to Wieluń, yet there are plans for cooperation between
the partner districts and regions of the Łódź Province.
The Łódź Province offers over 3000 km of marked bicycle paths
to all those who like spending their leisure time in an active way.
Most of the marked paths are short and run through the most
attractive towns of a given region. There are, for example, the routes
in the Załęcze Landscape Park or in the districts of Wieruszów,
Wieluń, Poddębice, Tomaszów, Zgierz, Łowicz, Skierniewice, Łask
and Bełchatów.
There are also longer paths consisting of many stages, with
a possibility of stopping for the night. Such paths include: ‘eSKa’
in Sieradz, the route ‘Through the District of Wieruszów’, the
Zygmunt Goliat Bicycle Path running around the Sulejów Reservoir
or the recently marked ‘Route of Hot Springs’ (Łódź, districts of
Zgierz, Pabianice and Poddębice).
