Interesting facts from the region
The Centre of Japanese Sports and Martial Arts “Dojo – Stara
Wieś” is located in the picturesque Przedborski Landscape Park and
was designed in accordance with the rules of the Japanese architecture.
The promoter of the idea of the centre was Hidetaka Nishiyama,
president of the International Traditional Karate Federation. The
centre was designed in accordance with the needs and the Budo
philosophy.
People practicing Japanese martial arts and other sports can come
to the centre. Rehabilitation sessions are being held here, which
employ elements of karate training to help people with spinal curvature
problems. Other activities offered by the centre are: lessons
about different aspects of the Japanese culture (calligraphy, origami,
ikebana, bonsai, haiku poetry), exhibitions, yabusame horse archery
practice, tea-making ceremonies, survival camps, canoeing, bike
trips, horse riding lessons, pilates classes, self-defence lessons for
women and classes to correct spinal curvature problems among
adults and children.

Piątek is a geometrical centre of Poland. The beginnings of the
town date back to the 14th century derives its name (Friday) from
weekly markets held here on Fridays as early as the 12th century.
In the market square tourists can still notice stalls from the 19th c.
The Gothic parish church dedicated to the Holy Trinity and reconstructed
in Baroque is worth visiting as well. In Sobota (Saturday)
tourists are recommended to visit the Gothic-Renaissance church
dedicated to St Peter and St Paul built around 1518 with valuable
wall tombstones. The manor of Zawisza family (19th c), built in
place of a construction from the 16th c with the use of elements of
the assumed castle, is an interesting place to see.

Kutno is a town famous for baseball. In 1984 Juan Echevarria,
a Cuban residing in Kutno, started to train a group of students.
Today, this sports discipline is practised here by about 200 young
people. In Kutno there is the European Centre of Little League
Baseball – the venue for the annual Little League championships,
with participants from Europe, Africa and Asia. The Little League
Centre is a sports complex with a surface area of 17 hectares, consisting
of two stadiums with stands with a total capacity of 4000, fields,
dormitories for 200 people and an administrative building.

The ‘Łódź Operation’ was the bloodiest manoeuvre battle
of World War I. The battle lasted from 11th November to 6th
December 1914. About 1 million soldiers served at the front from
Toruń to Częstochowa. Statistically, more people died every day
in this battle than in the famous Battle of Verdun in France. Both
sides lost about 200 thousand soldiers.
The remains of the battle are numerous ruined trenches and
military cemeteries, scattered across the former battlefields. Thanks
to the support of local authorities and people interested in the battle
it was possible to tidy up and reconstruct a few of such places.
Especially worth visiting are the cemeteries in Gadka Stara,
Poćwiardówka and Rogów.
