Dublin is a historic city with
some interesting street furniture.
Here signposts
have been fixed to an
attractive street lamp in a
photograph by T. Kelly in
the series ‘Ireland people
& places’ published by
John Hinde Ltd of Dublin,
who also published the
other example from Eire.
This card has intrigued
me for some time. It is a
privately-produced
photo card with the date
12.12.42 hand-written
on it. I guess it could be
in North Africa
although the hats tell
me that it was not
taken during the campaign
there. With their
beers in their hands it
makes me think of the
film ‘Ice Cold in Alex’.
Perhaps they too had
fought together in the
desert and had agreed to meet there after the
war and drink a cold beer under this signpost.
In a big London
department store I found a series
new to me. All the cards featured signposts showing
unusual names and were published by Lesser Spotted
Images in their series Lesser Spotted Britain. Each set of
signposts is connected in some way and on the back are
given details as to which county they are to be found in.
The illustrated example features signposts in North Yorkshire,
Northumberland, Cumbria and Worcestershire. The
sign to Drinkers End seems to have suffered a little?
In the Imperial War Museum
visitors can see the
often home-made signs
which once adorned the
trenches during World War
One. This postcard produced
by the Museum
shows some of these.
Signposts also came in
the form of milestones,
as in this example at
Zanzibar. The area has
had a chequered history,
gaining independence
from Britain in
1963. On 27th August
1896 ships of the
Royal Navy destroyed
the Palace and a
cease-fire was
declared 38 minutes
later. The bombardment
stands to this
day as the shortest war in history! As
can be seen on the signpost, London is a long way from
Zanzibar: 8064 miles to be precise.
A German signpost still in situ amidst the destruction all
round. It would appear that there was only one way to go.
