Shown here are four of the postcards from three
attractive sets of Signposts and Mileposts (series
2403, 2451-2) published by the London firm Birn
Brothers. Designed so they could be overprinted for
local sales, the postcards also have a romantic angle.
The example above was posted at Ipswich in August
1909, while the Wrexham
card below left was
sent from that town in
August 1908. Putney’s
was mailed from its correct
location in June
1908, and the card of
Southwell on the
