happened. When I started work in the early 1970s I looked at the possibility of increasing the collection and within a very few years started to attend some of the small local fairs. It was reassuring to be encouraged by some of the helpful dealers who gave me, a novice, much information, help and advice. Since that time my collection has increased with a growing interest in both Military and Greetings silk cards. Like many collectors, my interests now have branched out to other subjects which include local topographical, Clovelly and Lyme Regis. Also, for something different, I have amassed a good collection of Bamforth comics which also include the short series showing the rather naughty ‘Oscar the Pup’. Modern Lifeboat cards also come within my collecting interests. Postcard collecting is an absorbing hobby and I hope that both the small local fairs and their larger counterparts continue to thrive, giving the opportunity for beginners to start collections as well as helping the more advanced collector to find that little gem which is out there waiting to be found. Desert Island Postcards with Julia Sayers In the early 1960s I was given a couple of silk greetings postcards by an elderly relative. They were somewhat grubby (later found to be foxed as well!) and I thought it a shame that they had been unkindly treated in the past. I put them away in a drawer and forgot about them until we moved in 1967 when they were rediscovered. It was then that I thought about researching their history but, still being at school with exams looming and a distinct lack of funds, nothing much A nice example of a Military Silk sent from Frank Adams on 2 nd June 1916. History books relate the story that Kate stood at her window and watched her husband’s boat sink in a storm out at sea. This event turned her brain and she went crazy, hence the nickname. Many of the buildings have now been demolished and a lot of the land has been developed into a modern housing estate.
