Day 1: Playa del Carmen
Get your snorkel and flippers ready – the warm
waters of the Caribbean are calling!
Day 2: Playa del Carmen
Spend today lazing on the beach and sampling the
cool bars and restaurants of the area. For something
more active, head across the water to Cozumel,
renowned for its world-class diving. Check out the
ruins down the coast in Tulúm, which are pleasantly
located on a palm fringed, white sand beach, where
you can go swimming within the ancient walls.
Day 3-4: Mérida/Chichén Itzá
Check out the legendary Mayan ruins of Chichén Itzá
on your way to Mérida, which you can explore the
colonial centre on foot or in a horse-drawn carriage.
It’s also the gateway to the Mayan ruins of the Puuc
Route. After a day of exploring, refresh yourself at
some nearby cenotes (underground pools) in the
town of Cuzama, not far outside Mérida.
Day 5-6: Palenque
Leaving sunny Yucatán behind, you’ll hit the highway
and travel through the states of Campeche and
Tabasco to the state of Chiapas, home of
Palenque. One of the most beautiful
Mayan sites in Mexico, Palenque, set
in the Chiapas jungle, is rich with
colourful wildlife and plentiful
flora. The Palenque ruins are
incredibly impressive, particularly
the Temple of the Inscriptions,
Day 7-9: San Cristóbal de las Casas
Known for its ties to the Zapatista revolution, San
Cristóbal is an architectural and cultural wonder.
Take the chance to visit indigenous Mayan villages
and learn how the locals combine traditional beliefs
and modern religion with intriguing results. You can
also journey to beautiful Sumidero Canyon for a
relaxing boat ride.
Day 10-11: Oaxaca
The lively markets and the impressive Zapotec ruins
of Monte Alban are just two of many reasons to visit
wonderful Oaxaca. Here, your taste buds will be on
overdrive – from mezcal to chocolate and cheese –
even dried grasshoppers covered with chilli and lime!
Day 12: Puebla
After a short drive on one of Mexico’s comfortable
buses you’ll hit Puebla, famous for its hand-painted
tiles which adorn the city’s buildings, unique
handicrafts and the creation of the rich chocolate
and chilli, mouth-watering sauce mole poblano.
Day 13-14: Mexico City
Explore the world’s largest metropolitan area. Check
out the regal Palacio de Bellas Artes building or grab
yourself a bargain at the silver markets. You can
choose to explore the famous Aztec archaeological
site of Teotihuacán, with its impressive pyramids,
but be prepared to haul yourself up under the
altitude! Spend the final night with your group
tucking into nachos, fresh guacamole and
sipping on yet another mojito or margarita.
