Theinformation gathered from these discussions was then compiled and forwarded to the PerformanceImprovement Mapping (PIM) team.The 2013 Timony School Improvement Plan identifies school goals, which are in concert with thegoals of the school district. The focus will be implementing the Massachusetts CurriculumFrameworks, incorporating the Common Core Standards as they relate to student progress,curriculum development, staff development, and assessment practices.At the district level, staff will participate in the professional development opportunities provided tosupport the implementation of the new Common Core curriculum in English language arts,mathematics, and science. Additional support will be provided in the effective implementation ofstandards based instruction.At the building level, the Timony has two (2) areas of focus; more effectively addressing the needs ofour second language learners, a population that continues to grow, and becoming familiar with theCommon Core standards and how to implement them in a standards- based instructionalenvironment. Timony staff believes the most effective method of helping teachers to become moreeffective in these areas is through the grade-level meetings which are always focused on curriculum,instruction and improving student achievement. Timony administration and the instructionalcoaches participate in these grade level meetings as “experts” and facilitators of improvementdiscussions. Additionally, teachers will be provided time to collaborate with each other in an effortto accentuate our strengths and improve our areas in need. It is the strong belief that Timony hasmany outstanding staff members who should be encouraged to share their strategies and ideas withothers. It is through this collaborative effort that the Timony staff is able to continually improvetogether.The Timony Grammar School believes that parental involvement is critical to the success of allstudents. Parents are invited to become formally involved in several aspects of the school. Asmembers of the School Council, they participate in the development of the improvement plan andhave input into decisions concerning the school. As members of the PTO, they assist in thedevelopment of a cultural arts program and assist in organizing the parent volunteer program.The staff of the Timony Grammar School appreciates the efforts of parents. Faculty andadministration are constantly working towards improving communication with parents. It is thepartnership of school and home that results in creating the greatest opportunity for success for allstudentsIt will continue to be a goal of every Timony Grammar School staff person to nurture students,promote academic success, and welcome parent involvement. The staff is talented, hardworking,and dedicated to meeting the needs of Timony students by providing quality instruction that engagesevery student to achieve to his or her maximum potential. This goal requires the ongoing support of99
C i t y o f M e t h u e n A n n u a l R e p o r t : 2 0 1 2a school community in which both parents and staff value education, support student learning, andcommunicate high expectations.Tenney Grammar SchoolThe Tenney Grammar School celebrates its richly diverse student population, embraces uniquechallenges, and is committed to setting high achievement expectations for all students and providingthe academic and social support needed for our students to succeed.The current Tenney building was renovated and reopened in 1999 as a comprehensive grammarschool is located in the heart of Methuen. It is home to approximately 1425 students in prekindergartenthrough grade eight (8). Students learn in fifty-eight (58) grade-level homerooms. TheTenney also houses system-wide special education learning centers for students with substantiallearning needs and the Therapeutic Intervention Program (TIP), which supports upper schoolstudents who are diagnosed with emotional and learning disabilities. We are a community of lifelonglearners who are committed to improving instructional methodologies while creating a learningenvironment free of distraction and disruption so all students can learn and succeed.Professional Development provides ongoing, focused learning opportunities for teachers and is vitalfor the success of our students. This year, all staff members will continue their work with the newCommon Core Standards, creating lesson plans and assessments aligned with these new guidelines.This work includes integrating more technology into academic classes, utilizing non-fiction texts, anddeveloping students listening and speaking skills. All staff members are also developing strategies tosupport our second language learners. These strategies support all students' learning.Teachers in grades kindergarten through sixth have also devoted significant time to continue theirwork developing lessons, assessments and strategies to support their Standard Based classroomsand reporting tools, including the Standard Based report card. Much of this work is being doneduring weekly team meetings where academic teachers and specialists receive support fromadministrators and coaches. Professional development also takes place in monthly Literacy andMath team meetings. Representatives from all grades meet to have conversations about the contentchanges required by the new standards, share materials, exemplary practices and techniques. Theteams are also offering support and study on strengthening student reading comprehension in allcontent areas.Walk-throughs, conducted by Tenney administrative team, have generated conversations at staffand team meetings about what the Tenney, as a community "looks for" in a classroom, including useof space, best practice, cooperative learning and supports for all learners. The staff continues todevelop enrichment and enhancement activities in all content areas.100Parent involvement is the key to student success. The Tenney is committed to strengthening theschool's partnership with parents. The Tenney is proud of our partnership with the MethuenArlington Neighborhood (MAN) Center and values and supports the work done by our ParentTeacher Association. In addition to serving on the Tenney School Council and participating in PTO
