C i t y o f M e t h u e n A n n u a l R e p o r t : 2 0 1 2Department of Public Works (DPW)The Methuen DPW is responsible for maintaining the City’s roadways, drainage system, trees, parks,cemeteries, water supply, sanitary sewers, waste management and recycling. The departmentmaintains more than 180 miles of roadway and associated infrastructure. In addition, the PublicWorks Department oversees a curbside recycling program for many household items and oversees acontract for residential solid waste collection. Sewer MaintenanceMajor Accomplishments of 2012Management:Recycling and Solid Waste:‣ New recycling company- $50,000 savings‣ Obtained DEP Sustainable Materials Grant‣ Educational materials to residents regarding recycling- savings in solid waste disposal costs‣ Analysis of electrical usage- Searles Building‣ Replacement of meter system resulting in 7,000 savings over six (6) months‣ Replacement of DPW vehicles and equipment fifteen-twenty (15 – 20) years old‣ Sale of metal resulting in $20,000 of revenueEngineering:‣ Mill and overlay Jackson Street‣ Resurfacing Pelham St. Park and Ride‣ New Traffic signals at Pleasant Valley and Oak Streets‣ Mill and overly East and Pleasant StreetsEnvironmental Management:‣ Elmwood Cemetery: Installation of 500 feet of stockade fence/hot top main road‣ Veterans Park: Extensive repairs of four ball fields- backstops, fences and gates‣ Nicholson Stadium: Installation of new scoreboard and goal posts106
