Atthe Annual Town Meeting the residents voted to purchase a fireengine and build a suitable facility in which to house it. The firstMethuen Fire Station was a 2-story wooden structure located onLowell Street, just above the Spicket Falls (where Patriot Bridge is nowlocated). The first Methuen Fire Engine was a horse-drawn, handoperated“Hand Tub;” all Methuen Firefighters were volunteer, callFirefighters.One hundred, sixty-seven years later, the Methuen Fire Departmentnow employs ninety-two (92) full-time uniformed Firefighters, whooperate out of four (4) fire stations, and maintain over twenty (20)pieces of apparatus and other assorted vehicles.The Methuen Fire Department is committed to protecting life,property, and the environment. Our dedicated members serve theCity's approximately 48,000 citizens. The Methuen Fire Departmentworks to ensure the safety of all who live in, work in, and visit thecommunity.The mission statement of the Methuen Fire Department is to protectthe lives and property of the inhabitants of the City of Methuen and allthose who work, visit or pass through it from the adverse effects offire, medical emergencies and dangerous conditions created by eitherman or nature in a professional and timely manner. The Methuen FireDepartment maintains a citywide presence to effectively respond to allemergencies and non-emergencies. The Department also provideseffective educational activities to its residents and actively promotesfire prevention.The methods employed by the Methuen Fire Department toaccomplish this mission are as important as the mission itself. Ouremployees are the source of departmental strength.
