<strong>Sahih</strong> <strong>Bukhari</strong> & <strong>Sahih</strong> <strong>Muslim</strong>Kinds of <strong>Hadith</strong>In general, there are three basic kinds of hadith <strong>from</strong> theviewpoint of the Ahl al-Sunnah (al-<strong>Sahih</strong>, al-hasan, and alda'if),and four basic kinds <strong>from</strong> the viewpoint of theShi`ah (al-sahih, al-hasan, al-muwaththaq, and al-da'if).<strong>The</strong>se are further classified both by the Shi`ah and the Ahlal-Sunnah. Following are some of these generalclassifications:Al-<strong>Sahih</strong>: It is a hadith free of any kind of fault related byseveral continuous chains of veracious transmitters withmore than one first recorder (ruwat 'adilun, dabitun ghayrshawadhdh).Al-Hasan: It is a hadith which is well-known, and withreputable source (makhraj) and transmitters (ruwat). It hasbeen defined in these words in al-Jurjani's al-Ta'rifat: Alhasanis a hadith whose transmitters are reputed for theirveracity and trustworthiness; however, it does not reachthe station of al-hadith al-sahih.Al-Da'if: It is a hadith which does not have the qualitiesof either al-sahih or al-hasan.Al-Musnad: It is a hadith whose chain of transmissiongoes right up to the Prophet.Al-Muttasil (Mawsul): It is a hadith whose all links intransmission are mentioned by the later transmitters.Page 161
