Chapter 2Outline of GeologyThe solid geology of the district (Figure 5; Table 2) is dominated by Mesozoic volcanic andintrusive igneous rocks. The volcanic rocks, which comprise tuffs and lavas with intercalatedsedimentary rocks, crop out in the west and north of the district. Intrusive rocks consist mainly ofgranites, and dykes of various compositions. Parts of the district are underlain by Palaeozoicsedimentary rocks. SuperiScial deposits of Quaternary age (Table 2) form impersistent veneers onhill slopes, but are tiuckerjind more^widgspread jjn valleys and lowland areas. Quaternarysuperficial deposits are extensive offshore. \The Palaeozoic strata include the Carboniferous Yuen Long and Lok Ma Chau formations. TheYuen Long Formation, whose base is not seen in the district, consists of white marble.
