Conservation of the exterior elevationsThe north facade of the Administration Building isdivided into slightly recessed and projecting bays.These bays are distinctly finished with rusticatededges featuring polished granite and bluestone atground level and a brick wall structure with rendereddressings above the canopy to Flinders Street. Thefaçade is largely original, although the originalpale stone colour of the rendered banding, windowjoinery and other enrichments has been replacedwith a modern darker red–yellow colour scheme.Aside from this, alterations are mainly confined tothe area below the awning canopy.In addition to the concourse changes, the mainentrances to the station at Degraves and Elizabethstreets have been greatly modified over the years.Shopfronts to the east are a combination of originalelements and later modifications. ReferSite Information – CMP for further details.The south facade consists of three sections,differentiated by a combination of claddingmaterials; face brickwork, timber frame andzinc sheet cladding. The original zinc sheetcladding had the advantage of being low costand lightweight in construction, and the sheetswere arranged and painted to imitate blockmasonry construction.The remaining perimeter elevations including theMilk Dock and Banana Alley Vaults are largelyintact, although require some conservation. TheMilk Dock and exterior facades of the vaultsare of primary significance and contribute tothe streetscapes of Flinders Street and QueensBridge Street. Minimise impact on the design integrity andsignificant fabric of all exterior elevations onthe Administration Building and across allother heritage elements of the site.
