PRECINCTINTEGRATIONAND URBANDESIGNPage 44 of 68ConnectivityConnections at the western end of the siteThere is currently very little activation of the westernend of the station site in the vicinity of QueensBridge Street. This is expected to change as aconsequence of future development over the railtracks, as promoted within this design brief. Westof the station site lies Enterprise Park andBatman Park. Both offer poor amenity and as aconsequence are underutilised recreational spaces.Pedestrian and cycle access is severely constrainedalong the river by the intensity of both vehiculartraffic and the geometry of the diverted junction ofQueens Bridge Street with Flinders Street. Amenityis further compromised by the rail viaduct andintrusive supports for the viaduct, and by the needto provide service vehicle access to Banana AlleyVaults, plus any new development and the railyards for maintenance and emergency operations.This area is potentially a prime CBD gateway, beingclose to the major attractors of Crown Casino andthe Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centrefurther west along Southbank. At present, pedestrianaccess between these facilities and the westernend of the station is uninteresting, unprotectedand dominated by vehicle traffic.REQUIREMENT31. Respond to and promote the opportunity forfuture improvements immediately west of thewestern end of the station site.
