HERITAGEPage 36 of 68Ancillary heritage elementsThe Banana Alley Vaults form part of the railwayviaduct and were originally constructed by theRailways Department as commercial properties.The vaults benefitted from their close proximity tothe two railway stations and Queens Wharf, onthe Yarra River; the former are still in various useswhile the latter was operational until 1927.Produce agents and fruiterers originally used thevaults to store their wares before going to market.The name Banana Alley refers to bananasbeing stored and ripened here prior to sale.The vaults are constructed with rock faced bluestonefoundations, a brick superstructure and a concretevaulted ceiling. Each vault is divided externallyby a brick and render banded pier. The exterioris largely intact however the interiors have seenmany changes, with openings made throughdividing walls between the vaults.The Milk Dock consists of two areas: an entranceramp with loading bay to the former parcel officeand the dock platforms. It was originally the centraldistribution point for all of Melbourne’s fresh milk.Elements such as the granite cobblestones, bluestoneretaining walls and the open web truss structureof the roof and columns all date from the earlyconstruction of the station and these features shouldremain legible in any future development. The MilkDock has an important historical associationwith the city’s pastThe Signal Box ‘A’, located on the Northbank nearthe Sandridge Bridge is the only one remainingof the two signal boxes built on the sitearound1900. It has recently been adaptivelyre-used after the upper storey was destroyed byfire. A contemporary insertion, designed by theCity of Melbourne’s architects, now houses ayouth community art space.The original structure of the platforms, includingthe canopies, some decorative iron railings anda single timber and glass waiting area date to theoriginal construction of the station. The structureof the original canopies is essentially intact withonly minor repairs, but original timber seatingand panelled windbreaks have been completelyremoved. All original platform kiosks wereremoved, with new ones constructed in their place.Many platforms have original signage suspendedfrom the underside of the canopy structure.REQUIREMENTs23. Retain the design integrity, character andsignificant fabric of the five key areas ofhistoric significance: Banana Alley Vaults,Milk Dock, Signal Box ‘A’, Platforms(including historic structures such ascanopies and verandas) and canopyfrontage to Swanston Street. Repair andretain significant fabric. S124. Minimise damage to vaults in the insertionof any load-bearing structures for new worksabove the vaults area. S2New developmentAs noted in the Development section, one aspect ofthe competition is to provide opportunities to releasevalue from commercial development. The briefalso outlines opportunities to improve both precinctintegration and transport function at the western endof the station site. The new development componentis therefore a vital part of the overall competitionbrief. It must, however, be balanced with a respectfor the exceptional heritage value of the station andits wider precinct.One of the key intentions of the Burra Charter isto ensure that new work is clearly distinguishablefrom the old on close inspection. New work shouldbe clearly read as separate in form and surfacetreatment from the historic building or structure. Anyphysical linkages should make minimal impact onthe overall design and physical integrity of the old.Linkages should aim to use existing rather than newopenings as points of connection between structures.New lighting, signage, furniture and other fixturesmust respect the historic signage and fabric of thestation without copying it.For requirements on significant sightlines andhistorically important views refer to Part 3 – PrecinctIntegration and Urban Design.REQUIREMENT25. The dome, Elizabeth Street clocktower andfrontage to Flinders Street form the ‘iconic’view of the station.
