The KROHNE strategyKROHNE is present in almost every plantand process in the world. As a globalplayer, we react quickly to our customers’demands, whatever they ask, wheneverthey ask.We are active members of all importantindustrial associations to make sure weanticipate industrial trends and then setthe benchmarks that others follow.Development historyWhen the first Coriolis flowmetersappeared on the market in the early1980s, they were widely welcomed inindustries where their direct measurementof mass flow was seen as an immediatebenefit. The ability to measure mass flowratedirectly from a single instrument wasseen as a significant technological andeconomic advantage. In 1994 KROHNE introduced the firstsingle straight tube Coriolis mass flowmeter.Compared with those earlierdesigns, the main advantage of this meterwas its low pressure drop. The straight, single tube design has since proved to bea cost effective solution for mass flowmeasurements across a wide range ofindustries. The Optimass 7000 nowrepresents the third generation of thisdesign philosophy. This sensor requiresno specific installation engineering, yet offers outstanding flow and densitymeasurement accuracy and stability. The product family is completed by othersensors, each designed to offer measurementsolutions in different applicationfields, yet all maintaining the commonbenefits of class leading performancecoupled with ease of use.KROHNEMass FlowmeterCenter of excellence for mass flowmeterThe team at KROHNE’s centre of excellence for massflowmeter technology in Wellingborough, UK, has beenresearching ways to develop a straight tube meter thatovercomes previous limitations with this technology, opening up a wide range of new flow meteringopportunities. No limits with OPTIMASSThis new family of mass flowmeters, OPTIMASS, provideaccuracy, repeatability and ease of installation. The flowmeter has been designed to meet the needs ofindustry, with secondary containment to 100 bar as wellas approval for hazardous area applications, and it is thefirst of its kind to provide wetted parts in titanium, stainless steel and Hastelloy®, thereby allowing materialselection to give corrosion resistance for almost anyprocess fluid.Coriolis flowmeters are already widely used across manymarket segments, including chemical and petrochemical, where a mass measurement is important for applicationssuch as chemical reaction balancing, bulk loading fromstorage to tankers, quality control and custody transfer.Your BenefitWith their ability to provide mass flowrate and total mass, temperature, concentration, density and other parametersdirectly from the one instrument, our meters offer all theadvantages of conventional Coriolis meters, but now withsignificant additional benefits of their own.KROHNE - easy to work with.KROHNE Ltd.WINS PRESTIGIOUSQUEEN’S AWARDTHE QUEEN’S AWARDSFOR ENTERPRISEINNOVATION2005The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise are the UK’s mostprestigious awards for business performance. We aredelighted to announce that KROHNE Ltd. havewon an award in the Innovation category for 2005.2

A Coriolis measuringsystem is of symmetrical design and consists of one or two measuringtubes, either straight or curved. A driver sets the measuring tube (AB) into auniform fundamental oscillation mode. When the flow velocity v = 0 m/s / 0 ft/s, the Coriolis force Fc is also 0.At flowing conditions, i. e. flow velocity v > 0 m/s / 0 ft/s, the fluid particlesin the product are accelerated between points AC and decelerated betweenpoints CB. The Coriolis force Fc is generated by the inertia of the fluid particlesaccelerated between points AC and of those decelerated betweenpoints CB.A C BFlow velocity > 0 m/s / 0 ft/sThis force causes an extremely slight distortion ofthe measuring tube that is superimposed on thefundamental component and is directly proportionalto the mass flowrate.Density measurement is made by evaluation of thefrequency of oscillation, temperature measurementusing a Pt 500 sensor.3

KROHNE has available a powerful, yet easyto use, OPTIMASS meter sizing program calledKroMASScal. Starting with the basics of the fluid andprocess details, the user can select different tubematerials and meter sizes to make “what if” comparisonsto ensure the best meter is chosen. The program has a build-in database of manycommon liquids and gases, and will recognise thevast majority of unit descriptors for mass, volume, density, temperature and viscosity.Outputs from the program are available as printed hard copies,or as an email file that can be sent back to a local sales officefor their consideration.“Toolbox”diagnostic toolCoriolis mass flowmeters are used in manydemanding applications where process or fluiddisruptions are often present. In the past, diagnosingthese external factors was a difficult and timeconsumingprocess. Now KROHNE has available “Toolbox” a PC basedsystem that is able to capture, record, analyse anddisplay the low level sensor information using anRS485 data port that is integral in every MFC 050/1signal converter, when connected to a PC or laptop. The “Toolbox” system can further be used for metervalidation purposes by comparing the current sensoroperating profile with a historic record, to enableproblems such as tube corrosion to be identified.10

Calibrationof OPTIMASS Coriolis mass flowmeters in UKKROHNE calibration services has theUKAS seal of approvalKROHNE’s reputation for industry-leadingquality and reliability has been formallyendorsed by the United KingdomAccreditation Service (UKAS).The company’s calibration facility at itsWellingborough-based plant has beenawarded UKAS certification to ISO 17025.UKAS is the sole accreditation body inthe UK recognised by government toassess, against internationally recognisedstandards, organisations that providecertification, testing inspection andcalibration services.Calibration• True calibration against certified weight scales• Fully automated routines guarantee repeatability of result• Calibration at three temperatures ensures density and temperaturemeasurement accuracy• Accuracy of calibration rig at least 3 times better than accuracy of metersbeing measured (and therefore not susceptible to variations in temperature, pressure, flow rate, etc.)High accuracy with OPTIMASSHigh accuracy calibration rig for mass flowmeters. Compares the flow measured bythe meter with a highly accurate scale. Temperature controlled and compensatedfor any ambient drift, the brand new rigs are capable of measuring up to 4 massmeters in series against actual weighed mass.KROHNE has seven calibration rigs whichare now the only dedicated rigs in the UKaccredited by UKAS to calibrate Coriolismass flowmeters. They have been approvedfor testing mass and volume flow to 0.035per cent and 0.038 per cent uncertaintyrespectively at flow rates from 1,125 kg perhour to 247,100 kg per hour. The accreditation enables the companyto carry out custody transfer calibrationand seal instruments according to therequirements of OIML R117 without theneed for customers to undertakeadditional on-site calibration. This cansave substantial time and money.Seven state-of-the-art calibration rigshave been installed at KROHNE’s UKheadquarters in Wellingborough to meetthe growing customer demand for therevolutionary OPTIMASS range.“Attaining UKAS approval is of greatbenefit to us,” said Eddie Bridges, international product group managerfor mass flow at KROHNE.“We can now formally demonstrate thatwe meet strict internationally recognisedcalibration criteria, which we will applyto all products we supply.”11
