CASE STUDY #6: Killarney Community Centre Ice RinkfromthegroundupgreenPhoto by Justin LangilleKillarney Community Centre Ice RinkEast VancouverCompleted: 2009Use: Ice rink and arenaDistinction:Recycled most of previous building on-siteIt’s not just what the 250-seat Killarney Community Centre arena is now that earned it a LEED Gold certification, but what happened to the crumbling 40-year-old skating rink it replaced. Built initially as a venue for the2010 Paralympics, the Killarney Community Centre holds an NHL-size rink and a swimming pool. Heat that’sgenerated from cooling the ice in the rink warms both the building’s air space and the community pool—boostingenergy efficiency by an estimated 38 per cent. Dual flush toilets reduce water use by 40 per cent. Lowintensityillumination reduces light pollution, and a white roof minimizes the heat island effect. But it’s not justits own performance that makes this building stand out: it’s the care taken to recycle 95 percent of the concretefrom the old rink it replaced.64
