SPRINGSURE policeman Billy Boonreckons he likes Cairns even though he's beenthere only once.Billy has been putting together a prettyimpressive list of feature race wins in the pastfew months and added to that when KoolKewell "shocked" him with an all-the-wayvictory in the recent North QueenslandIntercity Challenge.Springsure is a good enough drive forBilly when he goes racing at his ôhomeö trackof Rockhampton, let alone Cairns.It's 12 hours, one way, to Cairns. WhenKool Kewell qualified for the IntercityChallenge, Billy had to leave on race morningat 3am to get to the track by 3pm forkennelling.Kool Kewell took it in his stride andlanded the big end of the prize which in itselfwas a surprise for Bill."He had a bit of luck in the run, but whilehe's very, very fast early, I didn't think he wasstrong enough to win the final even thoughhe had drawn the one," said Bill.Kool Kewell (No Intent-Indigo Mint) wasa giveaway from the Mark and CarmelJohnston kennel at the Tweed. He came northa year ago with his litter sister Tweed Intentwho is now probably the best in the Boonkennel."His lung capacity is not great," Boon saidof Kool Kewell. "But his sister is very strong."Boon was in high praise of Kool Kewell."He is such a great traveller. The 12-hour tripto Cairns is a daunting task for most dogs buthe handled it in his stride."Kool Kewell was a pretty fair giveaway.He had already started six times for twoTweed Heads win for Mark Johnston beforehe headed to Springsure."Mark (a fellow policeman) only sendsme dogs that can gallop," said Bill. "And forthat I am indebted."Kool Kewell has been a bit of a problemdog for Billy."He has a bad habit of collapsing afterhis races," he said."He's done it about four times now butalways during day meetings. I have to carryhim back to the kennels and he recoversquickly."Boon set Kool Kewell for the IntercityChallenge.
