Premier Victorians Peter Giles (box 1) and Dennis Trewin (box 3) got roped into handling Capalabarunners for the Paul Felgate kennel while they were staying at Felgate's during the Winter Carnival. Rival trainers are Anthony Bunney (2),Dennis Guppy (4), Mary Edmonds (5), Capalaba's premier owner Jeff Cumming (7) and Shannon Glascock (8).Phil BennettTHE GRA Board and the committee ofthe Brisbane Club were pleased to announcethere will be prizemoney increases in thecoming financial year for the Thursday nightmeetings held by the club.We believe it is imperative for theQueensland racing industry that theprizemoney paid on the premier night remaincompetitive with our interstate premier clubrivals. We appreciate we will be unable tocompete effectively with the Victorianindustry given their income base. The club has also agreed to return theFriday twilight meeting to a Class 3 meetingand there will be a prizemoney increase tobring it in line with the prizemoney paid atsimilar meetings at Ipswich and the GoldCoast.I thank the club for their initiative. It was also announced during June thatthe Board has extended the breeding incentivescheme to cover maiden events won by allQueensland bred greyhounds whelped after1 January 2007.GRA ChairThe earliest of these will not race untilabout May 2008 and the bonus will apply forthe last few months of the 2007/08 financialyear and will really kick in during the 2008/09 financial year. The bonus will not apply to the finals ofthe Vince Curry and the Eric ThompsonMemorial as these races already attract higherbreeder's incentive bonuses. The Board has been able to announce allthese increases as a result of the better thanexpected TAB turnover resulting from theresolution of the Sky/TVN dispute.Turnover for the past 11 months is up bymore than 6% over the same period last year.We have budgeted for a lesser increase forthe upcoming financial year, and believe wewill be able to afford the increases.A board meeting of GreyhoundAustralasia was recently held in Brisbane. There has been a continuing review of theNational Racing Rules and there were somechanges recommended that will be adoptedlater this year. There were also continued negotiationsregarding a central national data base for allgreyhounds. These negotiations have stalleddue to NSW raising concerns over contractualrelationships with their data.It is hoped these issues can be resolved asit is important for all control bodies and forthe public that greyhound information andform is up to date and available.A report has been released into the stateof the racing industry in South Australia andit makes interesting reading. The greyhound industry received praisefor its financial responsibility over the yearssince it was incorporated and the onlycriticism was there was a perception the boardhad not paid out a large enough percentageof its allocation in prizemoney. However, the author went on to suggestinvestigations should be undertaken so see ifit is feasible for the greyhound body to takeover harness racing in that state which is in aperilous financial state. It should be interesting to see whathappens. In late August 2007, Australia will hostthe World Greyhound Racing FederationBiennial Conference in Melbourne, tocoincide with the National Sprint andDistance Finals.A major issue for discussion will beanimal welfare and a review of the charterconcerning animal welfare, adopted in 2003,to ensure it remains up to date and relevant.Another matter involves the internationaltrade in frozen semen and ensuring there arecommon standards in place for the collectionand splitting of semen collected and processesin place to track the international trade infrozen semen.Lastly, I would like to thank EmmaO'Connor and the committee and membersof the Cairns Club for their hospitality whenI recently attended the Intercity Challengefinal at Cairns.Despite the inclement weather and thechaos resulting from the refurbishment of theracetrack by the Jockey Club, they were ableto put together a wonderful night which I amsure was enjoyed by all.The (July, 2007) Journal Page 2
