Bridge onsea toextendL’dweepairportrunwayNew Delhi: India could soonget its first bridge-onthe-searunway as the AirportsAuthority of India (AAI) hasgot the green nod to extendthe 4,000-feet-long runwayat Lakshadweep’s Agattiisland by constructing a1,500-feet-long bridge onstilts over the sea andconnecting it to the airstrip.Expected to be built ata cost of Rs 300 crore, therunway will allow ATRs to flyto capacity. The currentlength allows only a 30-40%filled turboprop which noairline finds viable tooperate. The reason:Recovering the cost of a tripfrom 30% passenger loadmeans sky-high fares thatwill find no takers.“The original plan was tolink the Agatti runway withthe next island byconstructing a bridge inbetween to have an airstriplong enough for handlingAirbus A-320 or Boeing 737.However, this did not get thegreen nod. Now, we will goahead with the bridgeon sea to extend therunway,” said a senior AAIofficial.Twin environmentalconcerns will keepLakshadweep out of boundsfor bigger jets. Bridging theentire length between Agattiand the next island wouldhave meant going through aturtle colony. And the nextisland would need to belevelled for extending therunway. “This was notallowed and we have got anod for the bridge,” said theofficial. The state-run authorityexpects to complete thework in the next two-threeyears. “All the constructionmaterial will have to beshipped to Agatti. Work willbe carried out very carefullyonly when the sea is calm. So, it may take a little longerthan expected. Also, we willbe working for the first timein a coral island,” said theofficial.Apart from this, thePlanning Commission hasasked AAI to consider anairport in the distant Androtisland for enhanced airconnectivity for Lakshadweep.TOIVol. * XX VIII.
