The total 2010 production of trout was 950 tonnes (DAFF 2012a). Approximately 95% ofthe trout production in South Africa is O. mykiss, with 5% being S. trutta (K. Resoort, Malapong, pers.comm.). Based on this estimation, approximately 902.5 tonnes of O. mykiss is produced annually. The growth of the trout (all species) production in South Africa over the last five years has increasedoverall (with a marked decrease in 2007) (Figure 8). Trout farming in South Africa was valued atZAR27.9 million in 2008 (Britz et al. 2009).South African trout farms in 2008 were employing 346 full time and 163 part time staff. Thesefigures are conservative as they include only those involved in primary production and not thosewho work in the secondary services (such as feed manufacturers or those employed in fishprocessing plants) (Britz et al. 2009).Page | 9
