Since theProgram beginning, there are 41 newprotected areas, totalling 22.5 millionhectares. This new tool has beenused by 80 <strong>Protected</strong> <strong>Areas</strong> in theProgram, including the participation ofaround 150 <strong>Protected</strong> <strong>Areas</strong> managers toparticipate.Integrated System of Coordinationand Management of ARPA Program(SisARPA)This tool for the computerizedmanagement of protected areas systemsallows the communication among theMinistry of the Environment, executiveinstitutions and Program partners. TheSisARPA links information from the ARPAProgram, the National Database on<strong>Protected</strong> <strong>Areas</strong> (the Brazilian governmentdatabase) and the Brazilian Fund forBiodiversity Financial System. Initiallydeveloped to guide the ARPA Programand its protected areas management, theSisARPA is now a model to be followedby the National System of <strong>Protected</strong><strong>Areas</strong>.This System - based on evaluation,planning and management processes- strengthens initiatives of organized66
