Since theProgram beginning, there are 41 newprotected areas, totalling 22.5 millionhectares. In 2007, the ARPA Programhas supported studies to establish 10million more hectares of new protectedareas.Protected Areas ImplementationMore than 20 million hectares of newprotected areas are under implementationby the Program - around 13 millionhectares of Full Protection ProtectedAreas (15 sites) and 9 million hectaresof Sustainable Use Protected Areas (27sites), totalling a support to 42 sites.ConsolidationMore than 8 million hectares of FullProtection Protected Areas - 17 sitescreated before March 2000, that alreadyexisted before the beginning of theProgram, are being consolidated.Protected Areas FundCreated in 2006, the Protected AreasFund, until December 2007, had the sumof US$ 17 million, from national andinternational sources.Protected Areas ManagementInnovationsWith the three tools listed below, inaddition to the innovative financial andmanagerial arrangement, the ARPAProgram aims constantly the efficiencyand efficacy at the implementation ofthe National System of Amazon RegionProtected Areas.Evaluation Tool for Protected AreasEffectivenessAlthough there were advances providedby the Tracking Tool - used at the ARPAProgram in 2005 and 2006 - anothertool was developed in 2007 - theEvaluation Tool for Protected AreasEffectiveness. This new tool has beenused by 80 Protected Areas in theProgram, including the participation ofaround 150 Protected Areas managers toparticipate.Integrated System of Coordinationand Management of ARPA Program(SisARPA)This tool for the computerizedmanagement of protected areas systemsallows the communication among theMinistry of the Environment, executiveinstitutions and Program partners. TheSisARPA links information from the ARPAProgram, the National Database onProtected Areas (the Brazilian governmentdatabase) and the Brazilian Fund forBiodiversity Financial System. Initiallydeveloped to guide the ARPA Programand its protected areas management, theSisARPA is now a model to be followedby the National System of ProtectedAreas.This System - based on evaluation,planning and management processes- strengthens initiatives of organized66
