This quality of life stems, inpart, from <strong>the</strong> numerous recreati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>sports</strong> <strong>and</strong> outdoor activities in <strong>the</strong>urban villages that make up <strong>the</strong> city. The urban villages of <strong>the</strong> greater<strong>Gatineau</strong>, rooted in our history <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> ways in which we have grown, are afundamental c<strong>on</strong>cept when it comes to planning activities <strong>and</strong> fosteringlocal jobs. By <strong>de</strong>veloping a Policy <strong>on</strong> Sports, Recreati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Outdoors,<strong>Gatineau</strong> wants to take into account <strong>the</strong> emerging pers<strong>on</strong>ality of eachurban village while c<strong>on</strong>tinuing to streng<strong>the</strong>n community life <strong>and</strong> improving<strong>the</strong> quality of life for <strong>the</strong> populati<strong>on</strong> as a whole. In so doing, <strong>the</strong> city hopesThe Policy <strong>on</strong> Sports, Recreati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Outdoors stems from <strong>the</strong> visi<strong>on</strong> setout in <strong>Gatineau</strong>’s 2003-2007 Strategic Plan, which aims to make <strong>the</strong> city aplace where it feels good to live <strong>and</strong> where people participate actively in<strong>the</strong> well-being of <strong>the</strong>ir community. This <str<strong>on</strong>g>policy</str<strong>on</strong>g> is a logical link in <strong>the</strong> chainof o<strong>the</strong>r municipal policies adopted by <strong>Gatineau</strong>’s Municipal Council. It tiesin with both <strong>the</strong> Family Policy <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cultural Policy, as well as <strong>the</strong> Cadre<strong>de</strong> référence en matière <strong>de</strong> participati<strong>on</strong> <strong>de</strong>s citoyens aux affaires municipales.Toge<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong>se documents <strong>de</strong>fine a coherent set of jurisdicti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong>areas for acti<strong>on</strong> whose shared goal is to engage <strong>Gatineau</strong>’s municipalresources in <strong>the</strong> service of <strong>the</strong> community.5
