The concerns centredaround the removal of trains with toilet facilities from anumber of intercity commuter routes, resulting in trips upto 2 hours without any access to adequate toilet facilities. The local member and Minister for Transport, DavidCampbell ignored these concerns. As part of the Lets Fix It campaign, which is attemptingto draw attention to shortfalls on the rail network and posesolutions to have them rectified,RTBU members handed out leafletsto commuters on South Coaststations. The leaflets drew attentionto the lack of amenities and howthe problems could be addressed.Several thousand leaflets weredistributed and initiated widespreadinterest among commuters. This wasa small part of an ongoing campaignto raise public awareness of areasof neglect with rail services and topublicly call on the government totake step to fix some of these.A modern rail service that cannotprovide amenities as basic as toiletson its commuter services is nothingshort of disgraceful.Connie and John Aquilina and Larry King at Wollongong StationRAIL & ROAD June 2009 Page 13
