From the Branch SecretaryThis issue of Rail and Road leads offwith the sad news of the passing ofour friend and comrade, the RTBUNational Secretary Greg Harvey. Aswe grieve and reflect on this massiveloss to our union and to the unionmovement, we are reminded of theprinciples and dedication to membersthat Greg always demonstrated, andeven in his absence I am certain thathe will continue to inspire manywithin the RTBU to maintain theirefforts to work to protect and defendour members.At this time the RailCorp StationReform process is in full swingwith staff reviews being conductedby teams of management and unionrepresentatives across the network.Unfortunately, our cynicism aboutthis process being nothing more thanan excuse for a cost-cutting exerciseis being borne out by the outcomes todate. Station members and activistshave provided some very impressiveand comprehensive data to the staffreviews, only to be largely ignored.In conjunction with communityorganisations we have been raisingthese concerns publicly and willcontinue to build and participatein community campaigns under thebanner of Save Our Stations, to tryto get the NSW government to listenand respond to the needs and voicesof local communities.Our industrial work has continued todeliver good results for our membersin tough economic times. In theInfrastructure area, for example, wehave recently signed-off on a numberof agreements with rail contractorsand labour hire companies working inthe industry. Previously, employeesin these companies were notprotected by collective agreementsand industry conditions. There isalso positive progress with the newBus Union Collective Agreementbeing negotiated with the StateTransit Authority, and negotiationsfor consistent new agreementsacross the main business divisionswithin Pacific National have alsocommenced.As an ongoing contribution to thepublic debate on the public transportsystem in NSW, the RTBU hasprepared and publicly launcheda discussion paper on priorityprojects that would significantlyimprove the rail network, generateeconomic growth and long-termjobs in the industry. The Fixing TheNetwork document was launched atUnionsNSW Trades Hall on June 25,and will be used to draw communityand government attention to whatcan be done to improve and fix someof the current problems in publictransport.A special mention of gratitudeshould also be extended to the RTBUWomen’s Campaign Committee andother union activists who have beenworking tirelessly on the campaignfor paid parental leave.
