Community Campaign Rejects Station CutsFollowing the results of the recent staff reviews on South Coast Stations, RTBU members and theirlocal communities are getting angry about the cynical cost-cutting exercise dressed up as reform.During the staff review processRTBU and community membershave distributed postcards to theMinister for Transport DavidCampbell calling on improvementsto public transport not cuts.A protest meeting in Wollongongon Friday 29 May was attended byrail employees and members of thelocal community disgusted at theannounced cuts to services on SouthCoast stations. The Governmentand RailCorp cynically believe thataffected communities accept theirempty undertakings about no loss ofstation positions or services. Theycould not be more wrong. Thoseattending the protest meetings wereclearly angry this Government’slack of concern for the needs of localcommunities. Media reports reflectthe same sentiments expressed atthe protest meetings. The protest meeting in Wollongong wasaddressed by the South Coast LabourCouncil Secretary Arthur Rorris, andRTBU Lead Organiser, Phil Kessey, as wellas other unionists and community leaders.The crowd in attendance at the entrance toWollongong Railway Station heard of thedeception of the station reform exercise.and were called on to maintain a strongcommunity campaign to oppose reductionsin public transport services.Report cards were handed out on theperformance of local Members of Parliamentin defending public transport in their area.All received a ‘Fail’ grade. People also worebadges with Save Our Stations, and stationstaff were issued with notices to place onstations to apologise for cuts in services.Similar protests will be organised in otherregions across the state in the comingmonths.The fate of the current or any futuregovernment in NSW will be stronglyinfluenced by whether they take heedof community concerns around publictransport and other public services. Anypolitician that does not respect the wishesof the local community does not deservetheir vote.MP’s rail transportReport CardTrain station services are increasingly being cut and compromised by localMPs who are in support of cost cutting, slashing opening times and in somecases closing stations altogether.
