RTBU Members Open DayOn May 22 the RTBU WollongongOffice held an Open day for membersto drop in for a chat or some advice <strong>and</strong>to receive services made available byWhite Barnes Solicitors, WageCover<strong>and</strong> Encompass Credit <strong>Union</strong>.The Open Day was also attendedby Branch Secretary Nick Lewocki,Locomotive Divisional SecretaryAlex Claassens, as well as SouthCoast Labour Council SecretaryArthur Rorris. Members formacross the region <strong>and</strong> different worklocations took the opportunity to visitthe <strong>of</strong>fice, meet union <strong>of</strong>ficials <strong>and</strong>other colleagues as well as receivefree financial <strong>and</strong> income protectioninformation, legal advice <strong>and</strong> a freewill making service. Refreshments<strong>and</strong> lunches were also provided.The success <strong>of</strong> the day will resultin the effort being repeated on aregular basis, <strong>and</strong> we thank all whocontributed to the Open Day.Eveleigh Farewells Three Retiring DriversCurrent <strong>and</strong> retired drivers <strong>and</strong> colleagues gathered atEpping RSL on Saturday 23 May to celebrate the careers<strong>of</strong> three <strong>of</strong> their number. The drivers, Wes Wardega, DavidDean <strong>and</strong> Paul ‘Porky’ Collins, with a combined rail history<strong>of</strong> more than a century were seen <strong>of</strong>f in good style at afunction that lasted well in the wee small hours.Those gathered had the opportunity to reminisce, share warstories <strong>and</strong> hear accounts (some simply accurate <strong>and</strong> otherswith the benefit <strong>of</strong> embellishment) <strong>of</strong> the careers <strong>of</strong> thoseretiring.Locomotive Divisional Secretary Alex Claassens, joinedthe assembled throng in ‘giving away’ Porky Collins.Paul was presented with a booklet compiled by colleaguescontaining some <strong>of</strong> his more memorable feats (mostly asrecounted by Porky himself).VALE Frank JohnsonTrain Driver Frank Johnston passed away on February 8th 2009.Frank was born in Mudgee 1953 <strong>and</strong> moved to Windeyer then atK<strong>and</strong>os.Frank joined the <strong>Rail</strong>way in 1968 at Eveleigh as a locomotive enginecleaner/acting fireman/fireman/acting driver to driver.He then went into the grade as Locomotive <strong>In</strong>spector with CountryLinkSydney from 1998 until 2004 until he left State<strong>Rail</strong> with 36 years serviceto join Lachlan Valley <strong>Rail</strong> Freight (LVRF) now called <strong>In</strong>dependent<strong>Rail</strong> Australia (IRA) then moving onto a company called <strong>In</strong>te<strong>Rail</strong> basedat Yennora.Frank was also President <strong>of</strong> the Eveleigh Social Retirement Club from1999 to 2007. He was a genuinely good bloke, <strong>and</strong> well liked by all whoworked with him.Family, friends <strong>and</strong> co-workers attended Franks funeral on 13thFebruary.Our condolences go to his wife Carmina <strong>and</strong> son Adam who also worksfor <strong>In</strong>te<strong>Rail</strong> based at Junee.RAIL & ROAD June 2009 Page 23
