Calculation and visualisation of ESN results
The calculation was based on accidents which occurred
on motorways and federal roads outside of urban
regions. The study was carried out over a period of
three years (2004 – 2006). All ESN results were based
on two different levels of aggregation. The first level
covered the NAVTEQ road sections and the second
level was based on the road sections of Saxony‘s road
database.
The VISUM module of the PTV Vision planning system
was used to display and analyse the results. Designed
for multimodal and intermodal analyses, the soft-
ware integrates all relevant modes of transportation
into one consistent network model.
The two levels of aggregation can be displayed together
or individually. Users should first look at the
route sections and then use the detailed view of the
road sections for the validation process. Changing the
screen view considerably improves the level of detail,
so that the safety performance on the different road
sections can be estimated more accurately. The elements
of the road, which present a safety concern, can
be further investigated with EUSka‘s Local Accident
Analysis module.
The road sections are sorted by their safety performance,
enabling users to see which safety issues need
to be urgently addressed. Federal roads, national roads
and country roads can be sorted separately, using the
filter option.
PTV focuses on accident analysis and research to help
improve road traffic safety in a growing safety analysis
market.
Accident black spots used to be
manually marked on the map.
Today, all data is automatically
analysed and presented on
the computer.
