infrastructure, one can say that the Asian market is
ready for traffic management centres. However, it
is still difficult to find the customers who are willing
to invest in these complex projects,“ says Thomas
Schwerdtfeger. “PTV does not supply the systems,
which also involves major spending on hardware. We
only supply the software solutions for these types of
projects. This provides us with a major advantage: we
can use reliable standard technology, which can be
quite quickly and easily implemented and adjusted to
the different regions“.
Of particular interest to Asian
markets: the simulation of
pedestrian and cyclist activity
The Asian market is challenging. The strategy of PTV‘s
transportation planning experts is therefore to continuously
develop software solutions which meet each
market’s special requirements. With VISSIM it is possible
to simulate pedestrian flows, meeting the needs
of Chinese customers (and of course not only Chinese
customers).
Additionally, cyclist activity can be modelled realis-
tically. This is an important factor for a city like Beijing
where the bicycle is a favourite mode of transport.
There are about 8 or 9 million bicycles in this mega
city. The cyclists have their own acceleration rate. They
can stop at traffic lights beside or behind each other,
they can use bicycle lanes or the street. The system
simulates all these situations, including the interaction
between pedestrians, cars and buses.
Excellent career prospects
The universities in China have also recognised the mood
of the times: as part of a Public-Private Partnership
project traffic engineers and planners of the Tongji
University in Shanghai can attend PTV Vision training
courses to learn more about traffic planning with the
help of the latest PTV Vision software version. PTV and
Huazhong University of Science and Technology have
signed a cooperation agreement.
The university’s qualification programme now even
goes a step further. In addition to the software training
classes as well as transportation planning and traffic
planning theory taught by guest lecturer Gerd Stuck on
behalf of PTV, the students also have the opportunity
to gain practical work experience in different projects.
They qualify for life!
