Traffic / PTV AG Future-orientated Traffic Solutions for China Be it Frankfurt, London, Dubai or Beijing – all conurbations throughout the world must cope with increasing traffic congestion. Intelligent traffic management systems have to be implemented in order to ensure smooth traffic flow. PTV AG develops software solutions for projects and applications in traffic, mobility and logistics. The transportation experts from Karlsruhe, Germany, help Chinese planners develop long-term traffic and transportation concepts, evaluate traffic count data, assess different strategic solutions by means of simulation systems and, of course, improve traffic flow. PTV shares its know-how with universities in China, and thus supports their traffic engineering programmes for China’s future transportation professionals. China’s cities are experiencing burgeoning traffic growth. Just a few years ago the bicycle was the most important mode of transport. But today’s traffic planners and environmentalists are worried about the extremely fast motorization rate. In Beijing alone about 1,000 new cars are registered every day, which means that the number of vehicles will amount to 3.5 million cars in 2008. To avoid gridlocks, Beijing’s traffic and transportation planners have early started to conduct studies on how to prevent traffic from collapsing. Traffic analyses for the 2008 Olympic Summer Games In spring 2003, PTV’s transportation experts were asked to develop a strategic transportation model for Beijing, including micro simulation of the Olympic Green for the 2008 Summer Games. The project for Beijing Transportation Research Center was completed within eleven months only (from March 2003 to February 2004). How many visitors and athletes will visit the Olympics and be in Beijing in addition to the 17 million inhabitants? Which mode of transport will they use and which routes will they take? A huge amount of data had to be analysed. PTV created a transportation network and simulated the traffic flow. PTV’s team of transportation experts modelled the travel demand for Beijing’s traffic and transportation network on the basis of a survey covering 70,000 households with 200,000 people. The survey provided vital information about the travel demand within the planning area re- Beijing 2008 transportation network – PTV software models traffic volumes in both public and private transportation quired for the analysis of transportation networks. “The travel demand is similar to the situation in Europe,” says Josef Janko, project manager at PTV Germany. “However, there is a difference in transport mode choice. People in Beijing take taxis more often because taxi rides are much cheaper than in Germany or other European countries.“ The new traffic model covered the entire urban area. However, the first project focused on the 3-km-wide corridor surrounding the Olympic Green. The level of detail was increased for the remaining city areas in a second project (2005 – 2006). The first project mainly analysed the traffic flows within the Olympic Green area during and after the Summer Games, whereas the second project concentrated on the expansion of public transport, in general, and the underground network, in particular. About ten new underground lines are scheduled to be completed by 2020. Three of them are currently being constructed. Traffic and transportation development over the next 20 years Based on PTV’s transportation model several complex issues regarding Beijing’s future transportation network were addressed. managed to ensure effective public transport for the athletes, visitors and citizens during the Olympics? Additionally, long-term objectives had to be pursued: What about the traffic situation after the Summer Games, if the Olympic village is turned into a residential area, and service centres, like the media centre, are turned into office buildings? How can the metro network be continually expanded? What is the impact of different rates offered by different transport operators on the number of passengers? How can the bus network be efficiently combined with the underground system? Beijing must also cope with an increasing number of personal vehicle trips and its impact on traffic. The city therefore uses the model not only to optimise traffic flow during the Olympics, but also to analyse future traffic and transportation demand over the next twenty years. PTV’s subsidiary in Shanghai supports this project. Dynamic traffic flow in Beijing PTV is currently involved in another major project. By working in partnership with Beijing’s Transportation Research Centre, which supports Beijing’s Municipality in the field of transportation development, PTV will create a dynamic transportation model for specific road sections within Beijing’s road network. The aim of the project is to identify the current traffic-related issues, to analyse them, and finally, to solve the problems with the help of PTV software. Improving traffic management More than 150 customers in China use PTV software for traffic and transportation infrastructure planning. Dr. Thomas Schwerdtfeger, member of the PTV Board, also sees a great potential in the field of mobility management. “Currently, many new roads have to be constructed in China.
