injuries. Automobile manufacturers, assistance providers
and system integrators are currently developing
different technical solutions for the eCall system. PTV
often delivers software solutions for GPS vehicle tracking
for these applications.
Telematics services – from roadside
assistance to stolen vehicle tracking
If telematics systems are integrated as standard features
into vehicles, many other telematics services,
such as roadside assistance or in-vehicle travel assistance,
will be supported. If the driver needs a hotel
accommodation or would like to know where the next
Chinese restaurant or ATM or petrol station is located,
he or she simply contacts the call centre agent who
will book the hotel room or provide detailed driving
directions.
The automatic eCall system saves lives thanks to GPS tracking.
Additional functions, such as Stolen Vehicle Tracking
and Geofencing, which is a digital fence for monitoring
vehicles and mobile objects, improve safety.
Rental fleet operators, for example, use geofencing to
restrict the use of their vehicles to certain countries,
and building and construction companies protect valuable
machinery and equipment against theft by defining
a digital fence around construction sites. All of
these applications are based on map technologies and
geographic software, which are provided by companies
like PTV, for example.
In North America, telematics and assistance services
have generated a multi-billion dollar business. When
Jenny can afford to buy the car of her dreams within
the next few years, telematics solutions will certainly
have become standard features in Germany as well.
And Jenny’s father will be glad that eCall protects his
“little” daughter when she drives around in her snappy
little sportscar.
