Vincent O’ConnorCoach, Teacher, Mentor, Embodiment of the <strong>Francis</strong>can Spirit<strong>GradNews</strong> • 3Sponsors of theGolf Classic andDinner and willalso be serving asCo-Chairmen ofThe Vincent andMary O’ConnorScholarship Fund.The June 21 eventnetted more than$150,000 for thefund, bringing theoverall total toabout $200,000.The goal over thenext year (CoachO’Connor’s 50th)is to bring that total to $500,000 or more so that at leastfive Prep students will benefit from an O’ConnorScholarship Award each and every year going forward.The son of Irish born parents, Vincent O’Connor wasborn in Brooklyn and attended Holy Name elementaryschool and Manual Training High School (later renamedJohn Jay High School).While attending high school, Mr. O’Connor participatedin varsity football, track, the school orchestra andserved as school president.During his high school days he was active in the parishof <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Francis</strong> Xavier and was greatly influenced by thespiritual leadershipof the Rev. JohnKean.After high schoolMr. O’Connorworked as amachinist for threeyears before enteringthe U.S. Armyandserving eighteenmonths in Korea.Upon his discharge,he entered thePhysical Educationprogram at NewYork University andwas appointed the J.V. Football Coach at <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Francis</strong> Prepby Brother Timothy Walsh, O.S.F.During his senior year at New York University, Mr.O’Connor was appointed the varsity coach at <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Francis</strong>Prep by Brother Cyprian Zorskis, O.S.F. His coachingcareer was marked by early success as the Terriers won theCatholic High School Championship in 1955, his first yearas varsity coach.After graduation from New York University with aB.S. in Physical Education, Mr. O’Connor attained an M.S.in Health and Physical Education from Brooklyn Collegeplus an M.A. and Professional Diploma in Guidance andCoach with assistants Frank Nastro andPhil Foglietta in 1961.1983 Metro Bowl caps a perfect11-0 season.Queens Borough President Claire Shulman presentsCoach Vince O’Connor with a proclamation honoring“<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Francis</strong> Prep Varsity Football Day” in Queens followingthe 1989 Championship Season.
