4 • <strong>GradNews</strong>Counseling from TeachersCollege, ColumbiaUniversity.In 1957, one year afterteaching Biology at <strong>St</strong>.<strong>Francis</strong> Prep, Mr. O’Connorreturned to Manual HighSchool as a teacher of physicaleducation. After nineyears he was appointed as aguidance counselor at G.Westinghouse High School.One year later, Mr.O’Connor was selected as theguidance counselor for the“College Bound” program atS.J. Tilden High School.During this same period,Mr. O’Connor served ascoach of field events at <strong>St</strong>.<strong>Francis</strong> Prep for eight years(1953-61). He also was headtrack coach at John Jay High School for four years (1962-66).In January 1971, Mr. O’Connor was appointed asAssistant Principal (supervision) for Health and PhysicalEducation in School District 19, in the East New York areaof Brooklyn. Over the years, he has served on many <strong>com</strong>mitteesassociated with the field of Health and PhysicalEducation, and has also been a member of a variety of professionaland social organizations.The Varsity Football Program at <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Francis</strong> Prep hasachieved an outstanding record of success under Mr.O’Connor’s leadership, and he attributes much of this tothe dedication and skill of the assistant coaches who haveserved with him these past fifty years.Under Coach O’Connor,the <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Francis</strong> Prep VarsityFootball Team has recorded285 victories and they havewon 14 CHSFLChampionships (includingundefeated seasons in 1957,’64, ’66, ’72, ’73, and ’83).Coach O’Connor washonored as National Coachof the Year in 1992, and hasbeen named New York’sCatholic High School Coachof the Year on twenty occasions.He has also served asPresident of the CHSFL.In 2000 he was the recipientof The Frank McGuireFoundation Award which recognizeshigh school coacheswhose dedication and skillhave a positive impact onyoung lives.His lovely wife, Mary, his son, Martin, his daughter,Maryrose, son-in-law Patrick, and his three wonderfulgrandchildren, Connor, Patrick and Dylan, have been hisinspiration, and he wears the label “Devoted Husband,Father, and Grandfather” as well as he does his title of“Coach.”For all these reasons, plus many more not recorded inthis space, and in celebration of fifty years of extraordinaryservice, <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Francis</strong> Prep is very pleased and proud toestablish The Vincent and Mary O’Connor ScholarshipFund which will benefit many deserving Prep students inthe years to <strong>com</strong>e.Brother Leonard Conway, O.S.F., Principal,wel<strong>com</strong>es everyone to the Golf Classic DinnerCo-Chair, Walter Riebenack ’57, shares histhoughts about Coach O’ConnorMike Henning ’57 leads the group in songfor old <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Francis</strong>.
