Comprehensive Development Plan – PKDA 203110.2.4.1 Return period calculations:The Indian state of Odisha on the Bay of Bengal coast has been hit by many tropical cyclones in thepast 200yrs. It was also calculated that the 1999 super cyclone had a return period of approximately50yrs. Cyclones in 1831, 1885, 1895 were also possible super cyclones.The following figures show the return period/the cyclone tracks impacting the coast of Odisha from theyear 1971 to 2000. The 2 nd figure shows the six synthesized cyclone tracks along the coastal districtsof Odisha so as to provide more complete geographical coverage of the coastal area. PKDA area lies in moderate damage risk zone (MSK VII) on the Earthquake HazardMap. Out of 9 class-I towns, 5 namely Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Puri, Sambalpur & Balasore are locatedin zone-III.In this region there is a possibility of an earthquake of 3.0-3.9 on Richter scale. As thetechnology stands today though earthquake prone areas are identified yet earthquakes still remainunpredictable.Possible DamageFelt only by a few persons at rest, especially on upper floors of buildings. Many people do notrecognize it as an earthquake. Standing motorcars may rock slightly. Vibrations are similar to that of apassing truck.
