SirDzrak, a death knight in <strong>the</strong> service <strong>of</strong> Orcus, masqueradesas Sir Keegan and attempts to trick <strong>the</strong> PCstoward ano<strong>the</strong>r course. If his subterfuge is detected,he attacks.Dzrak starts combat by calling forth his minions.Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> death knight’s minions rise from <strong>the</strong>snow-covered ground (<strong>the</strong> bones in <strong>the</strong> snow that <strong>the</strong>PCs have a chance <strong>of</strong> spotting) or move forward fromhidden positions within <strong>the</strong> ruins <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> keep.TacticsSir Dzrak strides forward arrogantly though <strong>the</strong>battle, supporting his troops with his aura and <strong>the</strong>pure devastation <strong>of</strong> his unholy flames. He seeks outthose worthy <strong>of</strong> his attention—usually a defender,most definitely a paladin <strong>of</strong> Pelor or <strong>the</strong> RavenQueen—and he calls out a challenge for <strong>the</strong>m to battlehim one on one. Of course he is not as honorable ascalling out such a challenge makes him seem. He hasno problem making opportunity attacks against s<strong>of</strong>ttargets, and his real goal is to keep <strong>the</strong> defender busyas his Risenguard and ghosts assault <strong>the</strong> PCs controllerand leader characters.The pair <strong>of</strong> tormenting ghosts focuses <strong>the</strong>ir attackson pesky controller or flying enemies. If tacticallyprudent, <strong>the</strong>y split up, dominating <strong>the</strong> controller and<strong>the</strong> PCs’ leader.The group <strong>of</strong> Risenguard stationed within <strong>the</strong> ruinspushes forward and moves into position to pepper<strong>the</strong>ir enemies with arrows—preferably through <strong>the</strong>arrow slits. Those hidden in <strong>the</strong> snow rise to face <strong>the</strong>irenemy in melee and work to give <strong>the</strong>ir fellow minionsand <strong>the</strong>ir master opportunities to flank.DevelopmentSir Dzrak does not yield and does not talk if <strong>the</strong> PCsfind a way to capture him. Heknows that his service to Orcus is too important forhis destruction to be permanent.If <strong>the</strong> PCs discover Sir Dzrak’s ruse and defeat <strong>the</strong>death knight and his minions, <strong>the</strong>y can proceed into<strong>the</strong> lower works <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> keep toward Sir Keegan’s tomb.If <strong>the</strong> PCs search <strong>the</strong> area for clues, a successfulDC 22 Perception check discovers a strange greenscale close to <strong>the</strong> entrance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lower works. Asuccessful DC 20 Arcana check recognizes it as<strong>the</strong> scale <strong>of</strong> a marilith—a six-armed demon who is amaster <strong>of</strong> swordplay.burst (including <strong>the</strong> death knight) deal an extra 3d8 firedamage with melee attacks until <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> deathknight’s next turn.Combat ChallengeEvery time <strong>the</strong> death knight attacks an enemy, whe<strong>the</strong>rthat attack hits or misses, <strong>the</strong> death knight can mark thattarget. The mark lasts until <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> death knight’snext turn. In addition, whenever an adjacent enemy shifts,<strong>the</strong> death knight makes a melee basic attack against thatenemy (as an immediate interrupt).IndestructibleWhen Sir Drzak is reduced to 0 hit points, his body andpossessions crumble into dust, but he is not destroyed. Hereappears (along with its possessions) in 1d10 days within 1square <strong>of</strong> his phylactery, unless <strong>the</strong> phylactery is also foundand destroyed.Second Wind (standard; encounter) ✦ HealingThe death knight spends a healing surge and regains 110hit points.
