At Saturday's drivers' briefing we were given a stern warning tobehave ourselves and not do anything silly. Some of us found itdifficult to reconcile this warning with the concept of competitivedriving, but we must remember that every time someone runs offthe course the whole proceedings have to be held up while thetrack is cleared. The track was damp, and it was all too easy tomisjudge braking points, particularly at the hairpin. The track herehad been resurfaced since last year, adding to the greasy feel of it.In my case I reckon I was far too cautious at the hairpin on everyrun, managing to stay on the track, but probably lost at least asecond on each run.I managed the rest of the run fairly comfortably, although drivingstraight at the large straw bales at the Snake chicane can bedisconcerting. The final corner was a bit scary, and the subject ofsome discussion in the paddock. As you approach it, the actualcorner is blind because of the wall and the summit. Some said itshould be taken flat out, and each time I approached it I told myselfto go for it, but bottled out every time! Within my class (Saloon &Sports Cars pre 1947) we had Neil Bennett's Batten Special, whichat 4½ litres outclassed the rest of us
