MathsMiss E MurphyIt has been a successful year in <strong>the</strong>Ma<strong>the</strong>matics department. Years 11, 12and 13 have taken <strong>the</strong>ir GCSE, AS and ALevel examinations respectively. We saygoodbye and good luck <strong>to</strong> our Year 13students and look forward <strong>to</strong> welcoming backsome Year 11 pupils for AS Maths and Fur<strong>the</strong>rMaths in September.Year 10 have now finished <strong>the</strong> GCSE Mathscourse. They will be concentrating on revisiontechniques and practising past papers aspreparation for <strong>the</strong>ir GCSE exam in November.A weekly homework club will run fromSeptember and will be open <strong>to</strong> all pupils.This year a selection <strong>of</strong> our Year 9 and 10pupils have attended <strong>the</strong> Royal InstitutionMa<strong>the</strong>matics Masterclasses which were heldat Glamorgan University on a Saturdaymorning. The course ran throughout <strong>the</strong>spring term and was enjoyed by all <strong>the</strong> pupilsthat attended. Participating pupils were:Sayalie Borade, Chandni Kerai, AnastasiaMirza-Davies and James Senior (Year 9)along with Megan Doran, Zola Hargreaves,Balaji Krishna, Imogen Sibertand Rebecca Te Water Naude (Year 10).Congratulations <strong>to</strong> Balaji Krishna, Year 10,who not only qualified for <strong>the</strong> next round <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Intermediate UKMT Ma<strong>the</strong>matical challenge,but achieved a distinction and medal in<strong>the</strong> IMOK Olympiad Hamil<strong>to</strong>n challenge.Well done Balaji!In April, <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>p sets from Years 7 and 8 <strong>to</strong>okpart in <strong>the</strong> National UKMT Maths challenge atJunior level. Congratulations <strong>to</strong> Year 8’sJonathan Wright, who achieved <strong>the</strong> bestscore in <strong>the</strong> school and a gold certificate.O<strong>the</strong>r gold certificate winners were Liza Kiss.Seren Marsh, Bill Sims (all Year 8), DanielAnder<strong>to</strong>n and Osian Boland (both Year 7).Well done <strong>to</strong> all <strong>the</strong> pupils that <strong>to</strong>ok part in <strong>the</strong>challenge, in particular those that achieved agold, silver or bronze medal.During March, all Year 7 and 8 pupils participatedin World Maths Day. The pupils thoroughlyenjoyed <strong>the</strong> online Maths Challengescompeting against people from all over <strong>the</strong>world. Congratulations <strong>to</strong> Lauren Ellis (Year7), Vic<strong>to</strong>ria Hill and Alex Langrish (Year 8)who achieved <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>p 3 scores in <strong>the</strong> school onWorld Maths Day.This year <strong>the</strong> Maths department has welcomedselected pupils from <strong>the</strong> feeder Primaryschools <strong>to</strong> take part in extended Maths lessonsat <strong>Stanwell</strong>. Two pupils from each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> primaryschools have taken part in <strong>the</strong> lessonswhich have been scheduled once a fortnight,throughout <strong>the</strong> year. Feedback from <strong>the</strong> pupilsand staff has been very positive. We look forward<strong>to</strong> working with <strong>the</strong>se pupils when <strong>the</strong>yjoin <strong>Stanwell</strong> in September.The weekly Year 11 homework club and halfterm revision session was again successful thisyear. The feedback was extremely positive andstudents were thankful <strong>to</strong> be part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> men<strong>to</strong>ringsystem. A special mention <strong>to</strong> all ourYear 12 pupils who gave up <strong>the</strong>ir valuabletime; <strong>the</strong> men<strong>to</strong>ring scheme would not havebeen so successful without <strong>the</strong>m.‘We say goodbye and good luck <strong>to</strong> our Year 13 students’
